Abstract

643,734. Artificial legs. STEWART, J. H. F. Aug. 9, 1947, No. 22180. Convention date, Aug. 10, 1946. [Class 81(ii)] An artificial leg comprises at least two limb members articulated together so as to simulate a knee or ankle joint, a hydraulic control unit co-operating with the joint and including at least one expansible chamber device connected between the members to control the bending of the joint and means for controlling the escape of fluid from the chamber so as to control or lock the joint. As shown in Fig. 1, a pelvic band 10 is jointed to a thigh member 12 which is pivoted at a knee joint 16 to a shin member 14 which in turn is pivoted at an ankle joint 20 to a foot member 18. Pivotally mounted on the shin member 14 at 50 is a hydraulic unit 52 having an upwardly-extending knee piston rod 54 pivoted at 58 to the thigh member and a downwardly-extending ankle piston rod 60 connected at 64 to a link 66 which is pivoted at 68 to the foot member 18. The hydraulic cylinders are connected by valve-controlled fluid passages in such a manner that the knee-joint is free to move at all times except when the weight of the user is on the heel. In an alternative construction the knee is maintained locked at all times except when the weight of the user is on the toes. The freedom with which the knee swings is adjusted by a cable control 290 which in an extreme setting locks the knee irrespective of its position. A further cable control 248 adjusts the normal or at rest position of the foot relative to the shin member. Specification 630,791, [Group XXVI], is referred to.
