An artificial leg comprises a thigh, a shin swingable relative to the thigh, a load bearing tube 25 in the shin a non-load-bearing tube 26 in the skin upward of the load bearing tube a plunger 30 axially slidable in the non-load-bearing tube 26, a spring 33 urging the plunger upwardly relative to the non-loadbearing tube and a connecting member 9 which connects the plunger to the thigh and which is pivotally connected behind the knee joint to the thigh for movement in an anterior-posterior plane. It is intended that the non-load-bearing tube assembly be removable and replacable with different devices for controlling the swinging of the shin depending on the requirements of the patient.
