Abstract

691,264. Artificial legs. TOUSON, I. May 22, 1951 [July 24, 1950], No. 18410/50. Class 81 (ii). A knee joint has parabolically curved coacting surfaces provided with telescopic control means. The joint described comprises working surfaces 1, 2, one of which slides on the other when the knee is bent or straightened. However, as soon as weight is placed on the leg the thigh portion, having a slot 5 passing around a pin 3, tends to turn about the said pin and thereby force the two surfaces into contact to prevent further movement. The action may be cushioned, and the friction increased, by a rubber block 32 carried in the thigh member. In order to assist in returning the leg to the straight position a spring-loaded telescopic arrangement comprising a rod 12 and tube 13 is pivoted between 19 on the thigh portion and a pin 7 on the shin portion. This is urged in a rearward direction by a spring 30, bearing on a nosepiece 29, and an adjustable rubber loop 40.
