Abstract
608,600. Knee joints. TOUSON, I. July 9, 1945, No. 17510. [Class 81(ii)] An artificial leg comprises a thigh part 1 and a calf part 2, including a foot, in which the lower end of part 1 has, viewed from the side, a convex curved shape consisting of the main radius 3b merging into a larger radius 3a which rises to the front of the leg, so that in the extended position of the leg the end 3a, 3b rests in a corresponding curve 4 at the top of part 2; a lateral concave slot 5, rising forwardly in one part and approximately parallel to curve 3b, 3a (or 4), and being engaged by a bolt 6 fixed to the other part, whereby in the extended leg position curves 3b, 3a and 4 bear against each other over their entire surfaces and in the bent leg position the parts 1 and 2 bear against each other at two points viz the point of contact of parts 1 and 2 and the point of contact of bolt 6 and slot 5, so that the parts 1 and 2 are locked in such position when the weight of the body is applied to the leg. Between the parts 1 and 2 there may be springs, counterweights, linings, packings or other means known in the art.
