496,179. Artificial legs. SIMONSSON, L. H. April 11, 1938, No. 11106. Convention date, April 10, 1937. [Class 81 (ii)] A knee joint for an artificial leg has the thigh and shank connected by at least one link, the bearing point of which in either or both parts of the leg is slidable in a slot so that the length of the leg may be varied during walking. The legs may be connected by the links 3 and 6 pivoted about the bearings 4 and 7 in the shank and thigh respectively, and having a common bearing 5 which is slidable in the slot. The surfaces 11, 13 and 12, 14 are in contact, as shown in Fig. 1, in the locked position, but when released by a forward movement of the thigh portion, take up the position shown in Fig. 3, thus being in a bent and shortened position for the return movement of the leg. Stops may be provided to limit the movement of the links and to adjust the travel of the bearing 5.
