Abstract

140,660. Underwood, E. W. May 29, 1919. Limbs, artificial.-A leg is provided with means for positively locking the knee-joint by movement of either the toe or the heel. A rectangular frame a is secured in the calf portion so that the upper horizontal member d is nearly in contact with the semicircular strip e secured to the thigh portion. Two pillars o, p project downwardly from the frame a, and are respectively pivoted to levers r, s, which are connected to the heel 2 by a rod 1 and to the toe 3 by a rod 4, crank 5, and rod 7. Any pressure on the heel or toe is thus transmitted to the levers r, s moving against springs 14, which shoot the plungers y, x into holes 13 in the member c. Springs 11, held between the top bar of the frame and by collars 12 on the plungers, withdraw the plungers when the weight of the wearer is taken off the limb and the pressure on the heel or toe is discontinued. The overlapping portion of the frame a is split to form three portions of which the central one g is bent over the top edge k at the back of the calf; the two outside portions g<1> are fitted with pads j which abut against similar pads k on each side of the member e. In the case of a limb for a long stump, the member e is suitably perforated as at 20, Fig. 2, for the passage of the belt or other means for holding.
