Abstract

731,223. Artificial limbs. EEN, H. L., and SIMONSSON, H. O. July 24, 1953, No. 20577/53. Class 81 (2). In an artificial foot which is jointed to an artificial leg by a pivot transverse to the leg and passing through a bearing, the pivot being provided on either side of the bearing with end portions which engage supporting surfaces connected to the foot, the supporting surfaces are provided on insertion pieces which are capable of being fixed in the foot and are interchangeable. The tarsal portion of the foot 1 is provided with a joint consisting of a ball bearing 5 which rests on an interchangeable insertion piece 16 fitting into a cavity 20 in the foot. The bearing 5 is provided with a mounting bolt 6 with which it is secured to the foot by a nut 7. A pivot 9 is mounted in the bearing 5 its ends fitting into sleeve portions 14 of a yoke 10 which is secured by a bolt 11 to a fitting 12 normally attached to the leg. The sleeve portions 14 bear on supporting surfaces provided by the insertion piece 16. The insertion piece 16 is provided with a central hole 17 to enable it to be secured to the foot by the bolt 6 of the bearing 5. The fitting 12 which forms a cover for the instep presses, during walking, on rubber blocks 21, 24 in front of and behind the joint which tend to restore the foot to a normal position relative to the leg. One construction of insertion piece 16, Fig. 4, is provided with supporting surfaces which are cylindrical, coaxial with the pivot 9 and lined with a leather sheet 15. When this insertion piece 16 is used the foot is only permitted to move in a vertical plane during walking. A second construction of insertion piece 26, Fig. 5, which permits the inclination of the foot in a lateral direction relative to the longitudinal direction of the foot is provided with supporting surfaces similar to those of the first construction which are inclined downwardly from the midportion of the insertion piece. In another construction of insertion piece (not shown) the supporting surfaces are cylindrical but are formed in rubber blocks so that motion is permitted in a vertical plane parallel to the longitudinal direction of the foot, in a horizontal plane and in vertical plane at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the foot. Motion in a vertical plane parallel to the longitudinal direction of the foot as well as in a horizontal plane are permitted by the use of an insertion piece (not shown) having supporting surfaces formed with a flat rigid base and rubber side pieces. The foot is provided with a bendable toe piece 2 and a pliant sole 3.
