801,761. Artificial limb joints. BACH, J. March 12, 1956 [March 14, 1955; March 28, 1955], No. 7594/56. Class 81 (2). A knee or ankle joint for an artificial limb comprises a joint spindle with a resilient bearing portion at each end and mounted in a bearing socket in one part of the limb, the bearing portions being connected to a rigid portion of the other part of the limb. A knee joint comprises a spindle consisting of rubber cylinders 4, 4a which are connected by a rigid piece 5 and are vulcanized on to plates 6. The spindle is fixed by screws 7 to holders 8 attached to the lower leg section. Bushes 11 on the cylinders 4, 4a are supported in a socket 12 in the thigh section. The rubber cylinders 4, 4a are deformed when loaded so that the thigh section drops downwards and the lower portion of the thigh section bears against a cup 16 provided in the lower leg section, thus braking pivotal movement of the knee joint. The cup 16 has brake linings 18. Pivotal movement of the knee joint is limited by an arrestor device which is fixed to the lower leg section and bears against a stop (not shown) on the thigh section. An ankle joint has a deformable spindle 24 formed by rubber cylinders 29 which carry a rigid sleeve 30 and mounted in a bush 25 fixed in the lower leg section 23. The spindle 24 is rotatable in bearings provided in a support 26 fastened in the foot section 22. A cord brake (not shown) is fixed in the heel and lower leg section and passes through a buffer mounted between the foot and lower leg section. Either the bushes carried by the spindles or the sockets may be made of self-lubricating material.
