Abstract

795,732. Artificial legs. VALENTI, M. C. Feb. 28, 1955, No. 5846/55. Class 81 (2). An artificial leg comprises a hollow foot having a framework to be fixed to the wearer's leg and an internal mechanism comprising upper and lower parts articulated to one another about a shaft, there-being disposed between the two parts of the mechanism a resilient connecting member which tends to return the artificial foot to its initial position after oscillation during walking, and which is pivoted to a braking member in the lower member of the foot mechanism, the pivot being movable within limits relative to the foot in dependence upon the inclination of the ground. The hollow foot contains a lower part 3 of the internal mechanism which is secured to a lower part 1 of the hollow foot, and an upper part 5 of the internal mechanism secured to an upper part 2 of the hollow foot, the two parts 3, 5 of the internal mechanism being articulated to one another about a shaft 6. The upper parts of the foot and the mechanism are attached to vertical members 32 which are secured to the leg stump below the knee by a tubular member 33 and are articulated at the knee joint to vertical members 35 which are secured to the thigh by an apertured brace 36 and straps 17, 18. Both parts 3, 5 of the internal mechanism are connected by a resilient member comprising a cylinder 10 connected to the upper part 5 and within which a spring-loaded rod moves during walking. The rod is articulated on a shaft 15 carried by a clamp 28 surrounding a tubular piece 20 in the lower part 3. A second clamp 25 fixed to the lower part 1 of the foot also surrounds the tubular piece 20. Rotation of the tubular piece 20 is resisted by a helical spring 19 one end of which is fixed to the tubular piece 20 and the other end of which is attached to the lower part 3 of the internal mechanism. An alternative construction for use with a dropped foot has a platform secured to the upper part of the internal mechanism for receiving the sole of the foot. Specification 628,958 is referred to.
