822,332. Artificial limbs. BRIDGLAND, H. E. Dec. 19, 1956 [Sept. 19, 1955], No. 26740/55. Class 81 (2). In an artificial foot the pivot between the shin and the foot is set approximately mid-way along the foot and above the sole, in order to avoid having to lift the body when a pace forward is taken. In one form the shin-piece 3 has a forward extension to engage around the pivotpin 2, mounted in the foot member 1. Forward movement of the leg relative to the foot causes compression of a resilient block 9 between the base of the ankle member 3 and a nut 10 on a rod 6, pivoted at its lower end to the foot. Resilient cushioning members 8 are fitted into the heel to absorb shock when the weight is lowered suddenly on to the heel. Other arrangements of the resilient block and cushioning members are described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown).
