580,811. Artificial limbs. HAMON, J., and NELSON, E. M. Nov. 10, 1943, No. 18651. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1942. [Class 81 (ii)] An artificial leg or arm comprises a substantially central shank 19 made for example of tubular light metal, a hand or foot member 10, which may be hollow and made of aluminium or plastic material, hinged at one end of the shank, a socket member 23 at the other end for the limb stump, and rubber 35, 36 surrounding the shank and hinged member in the shape of a leg and foot or of an arm and hand. In the leg shown, a U-bracket 20 carries a pivot pin 29, mounted in a metal framework 26, 27, and springs 30, 31 keep the parts of the limb in alignment. Resilient pads or springs 17 are interposed between an ankle plate 14 and the foot member. In a modification the socket member is below the knee, and is rigidly connected to the shank. Artificial arms of similar construction are also described.
