Abstract
106,098. Lawrence, L. C. May 1, 1916, [Convention date]. Limbs, artificial.-An artificial limb is composed of sections pivotally jointed together, each section being built up of a number of shaped plates adjustably secured to each other for lateral adjustment. A leg member comprises a thigh portion built up of four plates 73, 74, 75, 76, Fig. 3, with slots for connection with a knee section 56, 57, 59 similarly built up. The knee joint has side plates 54, 55 carrying a pivot pin 52 and a screw 58 for enlarging the joint. The leg section is similarly built up of plates 32, 33, 34, 35 and is provided with a recessed upper end to engage the side plates 54, 55. A spring 26 is provided in the ankle section to bear on the foot 10, a resilient block 79 acts as a buffer, and tension cords 27 are employed for connecting the back plate of the ankle section with the foot and the back and front plates of the ankle section. The ankle pivot-pin 15 passes through an eye-bolt 16 secured to the foot, and freely through one of the depending knuckles 14 formed on the side members of the four plates constituting the joint, but has threaded engagement with the other. By this means the side plates may be drawn together, or they may be forced out by means of a screw 24 above the pin. The form characterizing the adjustable-plate construction of all sections is shown in Fig. 1, wherein the ankle section is adjustably secured to a leg section comprising side plates 32, 33 and front and rear plates 34, 35, Fig. 3, by screws 37 passing through slots 36, 38 in the ankle and leg sections respectively, permanency being maintained by other screws 40 in threaded holes 39, 41. Control of the knee joint is maintained by means of a tension cord 63 at the extreme back of the joint and also by a compression spring 69 which is acted upon by an arm 66 tending to force the spring into its containing tube 71 as the joint straightens, the lower end of this tube abutting on a cup-shaped support. The thigh sections have padding 77, 78 to receive the stump, and a limb may be constructed without knee-joint, having a calf socket.
