Abstract

1405382 Knee joints knee braces H NAKAJIMA 4 April 1973 [7 April 1972] 16099/73 Heading A5R An artificial knee joint or knee brace comprises an upper member A Figure 2, for connection to the thigh and a lower member B for connection to the lower leg and one or more intermediate members C pivotally interconnecting the upper and lower members so that when the joint is in use. in a standing or walking position, the connection between the upper member and the intermediate member or members lies below the connection between the lower joint member and the intermediate members. In an implantable knee joint the upper member A comprises a projection 3 or coarsesurfaced or planar surface for anchoring in the thigh and a casing 1 having semi-circular bearing surfaces 5 for engagement with lower pins 13 extending from legs 12 of the intermediate member. The upper ends of the legs 12 are joined by an upper pin 13 which in the assembled joint engages a semi-circular bearing recess 10 in the lower joint member B which has a projection 8 or coarse surfaced or planar surface for anchoring in the tibia. In a knee brace the upper and lower members D, E, are. in the form of sleeves each supporting a pair of connecting bars 24, 29. On each side of the brace a short link 33 is pivotally connected to the bars 24, 29 so that the connection between the upper end of the link and the lower bar is above the connection between the lower end of the link and the upper bar.
