Abstract
479,132. Artificial feet and anklejoints. YEARSLEY, H., and KLOET, G. S. Aug. 4, 1936, No. 21421. [Class 81 (ii)] In an artificial ankle construction of the type comprising an indiarubber or like resilient pad which is compressed due to the weight of the wearer, such compression and the subsequent recovery of the pad being permitted by provision for a limited amount of relative movement in the ankle pivot between the leg and foot, a single central pad is provided, this and the part of the leg portion which engages it being shaped to allow sliding movements of one upon the other during the relative pivoting movement of the parts about the ankle pivot. As shown, the extensions d<1> of the leg portion d enter two slots e in the foot portion b, and a pivot bolt h connecting together these extensions passes through a slot g formed in a central projection f of the foot portion b, and is capable of limited vertical movement therein. A rubber pad i disposed on the top of projection f and formed with an upper surface shaped to the arc of a circle, engages with an insert r in the leg portion hollowed out in an arc of corresponding radius. A leather liner k treated with graphite is provided. A rubber buffer m is disposed between the foot and leg portions in front of the pivot. A rear check comprises a rod o passing freely through foot portion b and insert r, and formed with a hemispherical head p working in a socket q. Rotation of the head p in its socket is prevented by lugs (not shown). Disposed between the insert r and foot portion b, and the insert r (or other projection on the leg portion) and an adjusting nut t on the rod are compression springs n, s surrounding the rod o. An opening u is formed in the leg in order that the nut t may be accessible. Series of alternate rubber and leather washers, or according to the Provisional Specification, rubber blocks, may be used in place of the springs n, s. The toe portion a is jointed at c to the foot portion b, a rubber cushion c<1> being interposed at the joint.
