Abstract
166,110. Rowley, J. F. July 6, 1920, [Convention date]. Limbs, artificial.-Relates to improvements in operating-means for artificial legs in which upper and lower leg-sections 1, 2 respectively are pivoted together by the usual knee-bolt 3, and comprises means, operable bv a movement of the shoulders of the wearer, for swinging the lower leg section into straightened position with respect to the other section and leg flexing-means opposing such straightening action for the purpose of bending the leg when it is lifted from the ground. The lower arm 5 of a lever 4 fulerumed on the knee-bolt 3 is attached to the lower legsection 2, and the upper arm 6 is forked to carry pulleys 7, around which pass the suspender loops 8. The loops pass also around pulleys 9 fixed to links 10 loosely mounted on the supporting pin 11 of the pulleys 7. A resilient web 13 is attached at one end to the links 10 and at the other end to the lower leg-section 2. If the leg is lifted and relieved of weight, the web 13 bends the knee-joint, but by drawing upwardly on the suspenders, by suitable movement of the shoulders over which the suspenders pass, the action of the web 13 can be overcome.
