Abstract

112,690. Blatchford, C. A. Feb. 13, 1917. Limbs, artificial.-An elbow joint, to which may be attached a fore arm equivalent and a handling implement &c. is mounted, so as to be axially and adjustably rotatable, upon a socket on the stump of an upper arm and is flexed through means operated from the back or shoulders of the wearer, locking-devices being provided for both rotations. An enlargement c, Fig. 1, of a stem piece d is pivoted at e between a pair of lugs b on a disk a adapted to be rotatably secured to a second disk on the socket for the stump of the arm. The elbow joint is controlled from the shoulder or back by a wire, chain g, &c., passed around a sector or quadrant on the enlargement c and is held firmly in position by a spring catch j controlled by the other hand or the shoulder and adapted to engage notches i in a slot in the enlargement. A spring- pressed catch m is provided to keep the catch j out of engagement with the notches i. An implement, artificial hand, &c. may be secured to the stem d through a stem l serving as an artificial forearm. The disk a has a feathered haft n and is rotatably mounted on a disk q, Fig. 5, secured to the socket for the stump of the upper arm, the disk a being held in its adjusted position by means of a hand-controlled spring-pressed pin s mounted on the disk q and adapted to enter one of a number of holes in the disk a.
