Limbs, artificial.-In an arm, mechanism is adapted at the elbow joints so that when the arm is flexed, the forearm turns bodilv about its axis below the joint, and means are provided for throwing the mechanism in and out of gear and for locking the forearm in any adjusted angular or flexed position. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the forearm member 12 has a plate at one end with a series of circumferential holes, and at the other end a gear wheel 14, and can rotate but not move axially in a surrounding sleeve 19 carrying a quadrant 20 to which is pivoted the forked ends 22 of the upper arm member 23. On the elbow pivot 21 is secured a bevel-wheel 24 gearing with a similar wheel 25 on a shaft 16 carried by the sleeve 19, and a spur wheel 15 serves to rock the part 12. The shaft 16 is moved endways by a spring to disengage the gears and to engage one of a series of holes 13a to lock the part 12. The shaft is moved by hand against its spring to throw the wheels into gear, and is retained in that position by a spring catch 31. An operating cord is attached to the quadrant and to the body harness. A catch 32 is moved to engage a notched sector 33 to lock the arm against bending. In a modification, the forearm member 12 surrounds a stem formed with the quadrant, and carries a bevelwheel gearing with a fixed bevel-wheel on the elbow joint. This wheel is slotted at its centre to allow of being moved into and out of gear with the wheel on the part 12. In further modifications, the bevel-wheel is made to slide axially on the elbow pivot and is moved into gear against the influence of a spring by cam levers. Locking-catches are provided to lock the arm in an adjusted position.
