Abstract

108,872. Robinson, E. Nov. 20, 1916. Limbs, artificial.-The fingers are constructed so that the outer joints are bent before the inner joints. The tongue a<4>, Fig. 2, of the middle joint carries gear teeth for engagement with a toothed sector c<2> which is provided with a stop c<4> and is connected to a flexing-cord e. The outermost joint a<3> is connected to the tongue a<4> by means of a flexible member. Upon traction of the cord the tongue a' is rotated until the stop c<4> engages the lower joint whereupon this joint bends about the pivot b. The thumb is constructed to bend in an oblique plane and may be arranged for the two portions to be moved simultaneously or in succession by toothed gearing. In a modified construction, Fig. 3, the cord m has an enlargement m<1> passing through an eye l<5>; the pinion l is turned until the enlargement engages the eye, whereupon the innermost joint becomes flexed. The outermost joint a<3> is operated through a link l<6>. Alternative construction of springs are described for returning the joints to their original positions.
