Limbs, artificial.-The body portion of an artificial hand is integral with the inner phalanges of the fingers, and the outer portions of the fingers are pivoted thereto and operate by links connected to a rocking shaft within the hand, a spring keeping the fingers normally in the closed position. The inner portion of the thumb is pivoted to the hand and operated by a link from the rocking-shaft, and is connected to the outer portion by a spring-controlled joint. In the form shown, the moving portions c - - c<3> of the fingers are pivoted at b<4> to the fixed portions b - - b<3> and are operated by links g - - g<3> connected to arms f<3> - - f<6> on a shaft f rocking in bearings on a base plate e. The lower portion d of the thumb is pivoted at a<1> to the hand and is connected by a link g<6> to an arm g<5> on the shaft f. An arm h, h<1> on the shaft f is connected at one end to a spring h<3> normally holding the fingers closed as shown, and at the other end to a control cord i whereby the hand may be opened. The outer portion d<1> of the thumb may be bent towards the fingers against the action of a spring d' by pressure upon a table so as to facilitate picking up an article therefrom. The fingers are locked in the closed position by means of a projection l integral with a pinion k and engaging an enlargement l<1> of the arm h, h'. The pimon k gears with a sector j which is pivoted at j<1> and carries a pulley i<2> over which the operating cord i passes. so that on operating the cord to open the hand, the projection l is disengaged from the arm h, h'. A spring j<2> brings the lock into action as soon as the fingers close on release of the cord i.
