Abstract

Limbs, artificial.-The joints, such as the shoulder and elbow joints, have their pivot pins mounted eccentrically and in front of the vertical axis of the limb; means are provided for readily securing a forearm to and detaching it from an elbow joint; and means are provided to operate the pivot pin and lock it at the desired position. Figs. 1 and 2 show an elbow joint in side and front elevation respectively. The pivot pin 1 is mounted eccentrically in ;, cup-shaped 4 casting made in halves and secured to the upper arm bucket 2, and carries a grooved pulley 11 to which the end of the operating-cord may be adjustably connected. The pivot pin is retained in adjusted position by a spring-pressed pin 21 engaging recesses in a disk or quadrant 16 on the pivot pin. The fore arm 10 is connected to the pivot pin by forked arms 34 and a stem 9. An automatically acting spring-catch 24 carried by the forearm engages a hole in the stem to lock the parts together. A conical-ended stem may be retained in a conical socket by a spring catch; or.a stem may be grooved in such a manner as to prevent angular parts to engage a forked end of a spring catch. The lower end of the upper arm or the cup-shaped casting may be rotatable in the lower end of the upper arm bucket, means being provided to lock it in various positions.
