Abstract

157,256. Wels, F. Sept. 27, 1917, [Convention date]. Limbs, artificial.-A ball joint for artificial limbs and other purposes is provided with a locking device, for securing the limb in any adjusted position, which is adapted to rock when one of the parts is displaced, thus producing a jamming action. In the form shown in Figs. 1, 3, the invention is applied to a ball and socket elbow joint, and consists of a conical member A, the base of which is undercut and the edge chamfered. The member A is secured by a ball joint 8 to a screwed hollow or solid rod 5 carried by the sleeve 4 of the socket 2 in which the ball 1 carried by the upper arm is mounted. In operation, the part 5 is screwed into the sleeve 4 until the part A is in contact with the ball 1, and is then secured in position by a screwed sleeve 6 mounted on the exterior of the sleeve 4. In a modification, the base of the locking member B may be curved, the distance of the surfaces n<1> from the point p increasing from the centre to the outer edge. To limit the movement of either form of locking member in the sleeve 4, it may be surrounded by a rubber ring or a spiral spring. When movement of the joint takes place in one plane only the locking members are shaped accordingly.
