To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, CHRIsTOPH (.hnnELER-YVANKE, a citizen of Germany, and a resident of'the'borou'gh of" Manhattan, in the county,-city, and State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jointed Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improve-c ments in jointed dolls, andhas for an object to provide a assume will be practically unbreakabl 'and will lend itself to economic and simple manufacturing methods, to the end that such dolls may be manufactured in large quantities and comparatively cheaply. More particularly, an object is to provide a doll, the body and limbs of which may be constructed of wood or other analogous material capable of being turned or otherwise formed to shape by automatic machinery. It is also proposed to provide an improved knee and hip jointconstruction which will enable the doll to assume, proper kneeling and sitting positions, and also it is proposed to provide a shoulder, elbow and wrist joint construction permitting a latitude of movements to the upper and lower arm sections and the hand heretofore impossible in dolls, such movement simulating the corresponding movements of these members of the human body.
Vith these andother objects in view, an embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, and this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims. V

Referring to the drawings, and more particularly Fig. 1 thereof,-the body portion ADOLPIHY doll which will be life-like in Fig. shows the leg in kneeling position,

provided with a central bore or passage of relatively large diameter, extending from the neck recess or socket'l2-to a point substantially below the center of the body. The legsockets 13 and 14 are provided at the lower end of the body and passages 15 and 16 are bored upwardly from these sockets to a point substantially above the end of the bore 11, these passages being separated by'a central portion 17 and communicating with the said bore 11.
The body is shaped'olf as at 18 forming inclined surfaces intersecting theleg sockets and extending from a point above'the said sockets to the transverse medialline thereof.
Arm holes 19' and 19 are bored at each side of the upper end of the body and communicate with the central passage 11.
The arms comprise a tubular upper arm section 20 preferably formed of wood and turned to shape, the said section being provided at its upper end with an enlarged ball shaped portion 21, the circular line of intersection between the ball shaped portion 21 and the main portion of the section 20 being slightly below thearm hole of the body, in the assembled position of the doll as shown in Fig. 1. A transverse vertically disposed slot 22 is provided in the ball shaped portion 21, said slot communicating with the bore 23 of the section 20, through a reduced passage 21 and having its base disposed below the transverse axis of the said ball shaped portion and above the circular line of intersection between the said portion 21 and the portion20.
At thelower end of the section 20, there is provided a spherical socket 24 in communication with the bore 23 and an inclined surface 25 isproduced at the lower end of the section 20, extending preferably from the transverse medial line of the lower end of the section 20 to a point above the base of the socket. The plane of the surface 25 is disposed transversely to the plane of the preferably turned to shape and is provided with a central bore or passage 27. .Sockets 28 and 29 are provided at the respective ends of the section 26, and these'are intersected by inclined surfaces 30 and 31. A
spherical and symmetrically shaped ball joint member 32 is rigidly secured by gluing or the like, in the socket 28 at theupper end of the section 26 and is provided with an axial bore 33 and a radial longitudinal slot 34 (Fig. 3) cut from the outer surface of the said member to said bore, this slot being disposed centrally of the inclined surface 25.
In the socket 29, there is rotatably mounted a spherically shaped joint member 35 having a transverse slot 36 out there in and extending slightly more than halfway therethrough. A pin 37 extends through the said member transversely to the slot. A hook 38 is pivotally secured at one end to the pin and at the other end there is secured an elastic cord 39 which extends through the bore 27 of the section 26, the bore 23 of the section 20, the slot 22, the arm holes 19 and 19, and similarly down through the other arm, and is secured at its other end to a similar hook provided on the other wrist joint member. The ball joint member 35 may be turned to any position of rotation within the socket 29, while the slot 36 permits the same, to be pivotally moved about the pin 37 and by cooperation with the inclined surface 31 the hand may be moved to a position substantially at right an les to the axis of the lower arm section. dove tail shaped extension 40 is formed upon the ball joint member 35, during the turning of the same, the hand 41 being molded upon the said member and being securely held in place by the said extension. With my improved shoulder-joint, the arm may be raised to practically any position and may be carried above the head either by swinging in the direction of the arrow indicated in Fig. 1, or by rotating the same in the direction of the arrow indie cated in Fig. 2. The elbow joint permits of the lower or forearm section being swung with respect to the upper-arm section to a position such as indicated in Fig. 3, similar to the position that may be assumed by the human arm.
The legs comprise an upper limb or thigh section 42 preferably formed of wood and turned to shape, provided with a cylindrical bore 43 extending therethrough. A large socket 44 is provided at the upper end and a relatively small socket 45 is provided atthe lower end, these sockets being in communication with the cylindrical bore. An inclined flat surface 46 is produced at the upper end of the section 42 by removing a portion thereof, and at the lower end another inclined surface 47 is produced in a similar manner, and at the other side of the section. A spheroidal shaped joint member 48 also formed of wood and turned to shape is provided with an axial bore 49, and a radial longitudinal slot 50 is cut from the outer surface of the said member to the saidbore. The member 48 is rigidly secured in the socket 44, its axis being substantially coincident to the axis of the member 42, the

Thelower limb section 51 is provided with a cylindrical bore 52 extending therethrough, and at its upper end is provided with a'spherical socket 53 in communication with the bore 52. An inclined surface 54 I is provided at the upper end of the section 51 intersecting the socket 53, and opposed in position to the inclined surface 47 of the section 42. A spherical shaped ball joint member' 55 is rigidly secured in the socket '45 and rotatably engages the socket 53 of the member 51, being provided with a bore 56 extending therethrough'and in communicationwith the bores 43 and 52 of the sections 42 and 51 respectively, and with a radial longitudinal slot 57 extending fromthe outer surfaceto the bore, and disposed substantially centrally of. the inclined surface 54. V v V The lower end of the section 51 is recessed as at 58, and a foot section 59 also preferably formed of wood is disposed therein. The foot section is turned to shape two feet being formed from one piece simultaneously, which is then split to form the separate feet, the upper portion of the feet engaged by the recess, being cylindrical so that the foot is yieldably held against turning movement. The foot section is provided with a hook 60 to which is secured the lower end of an elastic cord 61, 1 said cord extending upwardly through the bores 52, 56, 43 and 49, and being provided at its upper end with a book 62 which is engaged with a transverse rod 63 disposed in the body 10 and extending across the upper portion of the passages 15 and 16. Both legs are independently secured in a similar manner to this rod, and the head 64 is also secured thereto within the socket 12, by means of the elastic cord 65 and the hook connections 66 and 67. The independent stringing of the head, the two legs andthe arms greatly facilitates the assembling of the doll, improves the functioning of the various joints, and enables any of the various parts of the same to be readily removed without dis turbing the other parts.
The elbow joints, the hip joints and the knee joints, it will be noted, are substantially similar in construction and operation, permitting of both a turning movementof the limbs and a swinging movement. .In the 120 sitting or kneeling position of the doll and in the moved position of the'forearmin Fig. 3, the elastic cord exerts both a rearward and upward pull, the resultant force of which firmly holds the inclined surfaces 125 to each other,.the cord being substantially at right angles to the inclined surfaces, and extending at each side and adjacent thereto, so thatthere will be no, danger of the doll wabbling. In a doll, the combination with a body portion having limb engagement sockets, of limb members, each-comprising a pair of tubular members adapted to be swung relatively to each other, said members beingprovided at their adjacent ends with cotiperating balls and sockets, and opposed inclined surfaces intersecting the surfaces ofsaidj-balls and said sockets, the center fifithe inner edges of said'inclined surfaces being substantially central of the longitudinal length of said inclinedsunfaces, said balls being each provided with a longitudinal bore and a radial slot extending from said bore to the surface of said member and un-; obstructed throughout the longitudinal length of said member, said slot extending unobstructed from said centers of the inner edges of said inclined surfaces, said limb members being provided at one end with a ball joint member engaging the sockets of said body portion, an extremity member at the other end of said limb members, and connection means extending from said extremity member through said tubular members to a point of attachment within said body portion, a portion of said connection means adapted to be disposed substantially at right angles to said inclined surfaces in the engagement'position thereof, and adj acent the centers of the inner edges thereof to exert a positive force to hold said surfaces in engagement with each other.
