Abstract

117,183. Smith, J. Sept. 28, 1917. limbs, artificial.-A hand with jointed fingers and thumb is opened and closed by springs and wires arranged in the fingers and thumb. The wires 3 and the springs 7 surrounding them are connected at one end to the fingers and at the other end to a plate 5 sliding on guides 12, 13 and connected to a pulley 15. The wire and spring in the thumb are similarly connected to a pulley 20. Each of these pulleys consists of two disks spaced apart and connected together by cross-bars, and they are operated simultaneously in opposite directions to close the hand by a rod 22 projecting from the palm of the hand. A spring-catch 24 engages a notch in the rod 22 to lock the hand in its closed position. In a modification, the plate 5 is operated by a spring or Bowden wire connected to the rod 22.
