Abstract

Dental engines. - In a ball-bearing dental handpiece the shaft 9 rotates in bearings 18, 19 in a sleeve 20 carried by the wrist joint 1 of the engine, the bearings being adjustable by means of a bevelled ring 22 which is screwed on the shaft 9 and held in adjusted position by means of a lock nut 24 which is in turn engaged by the driving pulley 8 keyed to the shaft 9 and held by a grub screw 11. An external casing 25 is held in place by a union nut 26 engaging the sleeve 20. The tool 17 is held in a chuck 15 mounted within a rotary sleeve 16 which is secured to the forward end of the shaft 9 and is not in contact with the outer casing 25. The chuck is operated by a thrust piece 14 engaged by a rod 12 passing through the hollow shaft 9 and threaded at its lower end to engage the shaft. The wrist joint of the engine comprises an arm 1 pivotally mounted on a bolt 5 forming the extremity of a double articulation 7 carrying two pulleys 6. Rotation of the arm 1 is limited by stops 3, 4 on the bolt 5 and arm 1 respectively.
