Abstract

589,857. Chucks. HOLLIS, A. C., and CLOUDSLEY, J. L. Dec. 31, 1943, No. 21917. [Class 83 (iii)] A drill chuck in which the tool can be changed whilst the spindle is rotating has a set of jaws 21 controlled by a sliding bevel-closing sleeve 3 secured by screws 6 to a body portion 4 having radial slots housing nut sections 8 connected by pivoted links 18 to a hood 9 slidable on the shank 1 that is threaded at 2 to coact with the nut. The ends of the links 18 have flats on one side of the pivots to prevent the links from moving beyond the dead centre position which is normally maintained by a spring 17 interposed between the body and hood. An operating sleeve 10 is mounted on the hood by a ball race 13 and is constrained to rotate with the head, except when grasped by the hand, under the light frictional engagement of spring pressed balls 16. A groove 16a receives the balls to maintain the chuck in the open position when desired. The end of the spindle is bored to receive the stem 23 of a pressure plate 22 engaging the ends of the jaws. The stem is in two parts, spring-pressed apart and it bears on a ball 24. In a modification the links 18 are loosely interposed and in a further form the nut sections are operated by slots 8b, Fig. 6, engaged by crank pins 28 on stub shafts 27 operated by other crank pins (not shown) engaging grooves in the hood.
