Abstract

191,959. Herbert, Sir A., and Lloyd, A. H. Jan. 13, 1922. Chucks.-A bevel-closing drill chuck of the kind having a threaded connection between the body and the driving shank for operating the jaws comprises a shank having a cylindrical portion A<3> and a reduced threaded portion A<5> the latter being engaged by two threaded pads C mounted in recesses in the chuck body A and constituting a split nut which is normally retained in the position shown in the Figure by a corrugated axially-movable spring-pressed sleeve E having a tapered inturned flange E<4>. The lower end of the shank is threaded to receive a sleeve H fitting into thelower end of the body A, the axial movement of which is limited by a flange H<2>. The jaws B<2> are radially guided by means of a member G pivotally mounted in the sleeve H, and are operated by a member B threaded on to the chuckbody. In order to change a drill without stopping the shank the sleeve E is moved downwards against its spring whereupon the split nut C is disengaged by the spring D thus disengaging the body A and its associated parts from the shank and permitting them to be moved axially to open the jaws by the engagement of the flange E<5> of the member B. To close the chuck the sleeve E is released whereupon the spring F acts to reengage the nut and cause the chuck body to be screwed up to close the jaws, the grip being further tightened by the contact of the drill with the work.
