511,975. Lathe centres and drivers. FORKARDT, R. Feb 28, 1938, No. 6309. Convention date, Feb. 27, 1937. [Class 83 iii)] A lathe driver for turning work between centres having a pair of clamping jaws 2a actuated by means passing through the spindle has the jaws secured to pins 21 on spiral wheels 21a engaging corresponding spiral teeth on a non-rotating piston member 23 which is moved axially to open and close the jaws. The pins 21 are mounted in a slide 19 which has slight floating movement in the body 1 to relieve the centre 3 from lateral strains. The piston member may be spring urged in the closing direction and has straight teeth 24 coacting with a pin 25. To adjust the jaws the pin 25 is withdrawn and the jaws rotated in unison by means of a hexagonal key inserted in a socket in one of the pins 21. In a modification, Fig. 3, the centre may have axial movement. In this form the piston member 23 is guided in a bush 28 and the centre 3a is urged forwardly by a spring 29 against a stop ring 30 which serves as a work abutment. The rear part of the piston member also encloses a spring 31 which applies pressure to the stamping collet 32. During the forward clamping movement of the piston member 23, the centre has the additional support of the stamping pressure exerted by the collet. On the return stroke of the piston member a shoulder 33 causes positive withdrawal of the collet and unclamping of the centre. Specification 463,227 is referred to:
