511,864. Chucks. FORKARDT, R. Feb. 25, 1938, Nos. 6061 and 6062. Convention dates, Feb. 25, 1937, and Feb. 27, 1937. [Class 83 (iii)] A device for clamping a chuck having a sleeve 2a movable axially over a chuck body comprises a lever 3 actuated by a spindle 7 having a single bearing in the casing 5 which permits rocking movement of the spindle. A pivot bolt 6 extends through the lever 3 into the casing and the spindle 7 has a screw thread co-operating with a nut 8 mounted in a cylindrical bore of the lever. The ball mounting 9 of the spindle in the casing permits the rocking movement of the spindle when it is rotated by a handle 10 to open or close the chuck. The body 1 carries radially movable jaws 13, adapted either for bar stock or chucking operations, and closed by the wedge action of surfaces 14, 15 of the dovetail form 16. Behind each jaw is a spring-pressed plunger 17 bearing on wedge surfaces which are oppositely inclined to the surfaces 14. When the sleeve 2a is moved to the left to clamp the jaws the plungers 17 move outwardly and prevent return movement of the sleeve through vibration. The plungers 17 may be wedge shaped to increase their locking action.
