Abstract

A precipitation-hardenable Ta-base alloy consists, by weight, of W, optionally with Mo and/or Re, in a total amount of 7-10%, the W content being at least 5%, Re when present not exceeding 3%, and Mo when present not exceeding 2%; Zr 0.25-1%, with the proviso that all or part of this element may be substituted on an atom-to-atom basis by Hf (which may thus range from 0.5-2%); nitrogen 0.04-0.1%; Ta balance except for impurities. The latter may comprise C, oxygen, Si, Fe and S in a total amount less than 0.1%: C and oxygen should each not exceed 100 p.p.m., and preferably their combined total should not exceed this amount. Precipitation-hardening is effected by solution-treatment for one hour at 1700 DEG -2000 DEG C., quenching to room temperature e.g. in He, and ageing for one hour at 800 DEG -1325 DEG C.
