Abstract

Heat-treatable aluminium alloys are given an improved resistance to inter-granular corrosion by subjecting them after solution treatment to a two-stage ageing treatment, the first stage being at a higher, and the second stage at a lower, temperature. The alloy may be cooled directly from the upper to the lower temperature, or may be intermediately cooled to ambient temperature. General temperature ranges disclosed are 325 DEG -475 DEG F. for the first stage, occupying 10-50% of the total ageing time, and 200 DEG -350 DEG F. for the second stage, but particular ranges for the different classes of alloys are also given.
