Abstract

1,114,384. Two-part couplings. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORPORATION. 18 March, 1966 [22 March, 1965], No. 11974/66. Heading H2E. The plug-and-socket parts of a quick-release connector are held together by the engagement of toothed resilient arms 23 of the plug in threads formed in an outer body shell of the socket, the arms being allowed to spring out (as shown) to disengage the shell when quick release of the connector is required. The arms extend from a sleeve 18, rotatably mounted on the main plug body and rigidly fixed to an outer shell 17, and are initially held in an operative position by a cam portion 29 of an axially slidable locking sleeve 24. The plug-andsocket parts are connected by screwing the arms of the sleeve 18 on to the socket shell, and disconnected by either unscrewing the sleeve 18 or by using pneumatic, hydraulic, or explosive pressure in a chamber 32 to move the locking sleeve 24 axially between the shell 17 and the sleeve 18 to release the arms 23 and force the connector parts apart. The looking sleeve 24 has seals 26, 28 and the two connector parts have keys 13 and keyways 12 to ensure correct coupling. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown), the outer sleeve 17 is absent, and the locking sleeve (41) may be moved axially out of engagement with the arms (48) by wires (43) which also serve to separate the two connector parts. In a further modification (Fig. 11, not shown), the locking sleeve may be operated by either wires (43) or pressure means (57), the latter causing a sleeve (53) to engage a socket mounting panel (11) so as to move the locking sleeve axially away from the panel to release the arms (48) and disconnect the connector.
