907,083. Two-part couplings. BENDIX CORPORATION. Oct. 26, 1960 [Nov. 24, 1959], No. 36769/60. Class 38 (1). A locking device for a plug-and-socket connector comprises a plurality of radially disposed pins 44 on the socket 10 slidably receivable in slots 75 in the plug 11, said slots opening towards the socket 10 and including spring plungers 69 which can be depressed to permit the pins 44 to enter off-set parts 79 of the slots, the plungers then returning behind the pins to prevent their escaping until a release mechanism for simultaneously opening the slots is operated. To connect parts 10 and 11, guiding splines 37, on a hood 31 surrounding pin contacts 29, are engaged in slots 39 in a socket skirt 34. As the contacts engage, a plug sleeve 60 in which the slots 75 are formed depresses an outer socket sleeve 45 against a spring 47 to uncover pins 44, which enter and are locked in slots 75 as described above. A knurled sleeve 57 on the plug is then rotated carrying with it the sleeve 60 and a socket sleeve 40, which carries pins 44 and is screw-threaded on the socket shell 12. As the sleeve 40 moves up the shell 12 a spring 66 in the plug is compressed to force a ring 56 into engagement with the skirt 34 of shell 12. Coil springs 80 in recesses 73 of sleeve 60 tend to rotate projecting portions 72 of the head 67 of sleeve 57 relative to the sleeve 60, such rotation being prevented by lanyard pin 85 held by spring 86 in an elevated position in which it extends from head 67 into sleeve 60. To release the plug lanyard cord 89 is pulled, e.g. by a missile body as it begins to separate from its nose cone which carries socket 10. Pin 85 disengages sleeve 60, and compressed spring 66 causes pins 44 to exert a camming action upon portions 79 of slots 75, so moving sleeve 60 with respect to head 67 against the springs 80 that pins 44 escape from slots 75. The force exerted by compressed springs 66 and 47 then quickly separates connector parts 10 and 11. Springs 80 then cause sleeve 60 to return to its original position relative to head 67, when lanyard pin 85 may be restored to its former elevated position engaging sleeve 60. Connector parts 10 and 11 may be reconnected after sleeve 40 is restored to its initial position.
