Abstract

995,021. Two-part couplings. BENDIX CORPORATION. Oct. 8, 1962 [Oct. 18, 1961], No. 38039/62. Heading H2E. In a multi-contact connector with plug and socket halves 11, 12, each comprising an insulating insert secured within a tubular shell, each socket contact 29 is individually retained in a passage 70 extending through insert 35 by a bushing 51 secured to an elastically deformable plate 37 which forms part of the insert 35, the plug contacts 25 being similarly held in insert 30. The springy metal bushing 51, Fig. 4, has a rear sleeve 52 with annular flanges 54, 55 co-operating with a reduced diameter portion 47 of the bore 46 through plate 37 to secure bushing 51 against axial movement, and forward resilient fingers 56 shaped as shown to latch behind a rearwardly-inclined shoulder 64 on contact 29 to prevent rearward contact movement, forward contact movement being prevented by contact shoulder 48. The contact 29, crimped to lead 42 at 40, is inserted by thrusting it through the elastomeric rear sealing part 39 of insert 35 into bushing 51, and may be withdrawn by means of a tool (Fig. 12, not shown), which passes through the resilient front insert portion 36 to meet the bevelled edges of fingers 56 and lift them out of engagement with contact shoulder 64. The mating shells 14, 15 of the connector have polarizing splines 22 and complementary grooves 24 respectively, and are fastened together by a spring-pressed bayonet connection of the type disclosed in Specification 832,869.
