Abstract

955,632. Two-part couplings. HARVEY HUBBELL Inc. Jan. 23, 1962 [Feb. 21, 1961], No. 2474/62. Heading H2E. A pair of co-operating electrical connectors are enclosed by protective covers which seal the cable entries to the connectors and the connectors themselves when the two parts are in engagement. As shown, the rear end of each connector is conically tapered at 40, and has a sleeve 42, through which the connecting cable is forced. The front end of the socket cover has an overhanging portion 44 which carries flanges 48, 50. The plug cover has a lip 86 and groove 84 at its front end. On insertion of the plug into the socket the flange 48 and the lip 86 are deformed until the lip passes the flange and comes into sealing contact with the face 59 of the flange 50. The flange 48 is bent inwards by this action and presses against the outside of the conical portion 82, thus forming a second sealing region. In a modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), the flange 48 extends further radially inward so that in the sealing position its end presses against the back of the lip 86 and thus forms a third sealing region. The covers may be used with connectors which have curved L-shaped blades which are inserted and then rotated to lock under the face of the socket to prevent axial separation of the two parts. The connectors may be provided with strain relief clamps and the covers are provided with ribs to grip the connector bodies.
