Armouring, sheathing, or covering, connection of.-An elastic bush or gland for the protection and the making of a watertight joint around cables at their junction or where they pass through 'holes in beams or the casings of electrical apparatus, is provided on its inner surface with a plurality of ridges which tightly grip the cable and between them form cavities which preferably may be filled with a watertight plastic substance such as bitumen or red-lead. As shown in Fig 1, the gland a has two external flanges b which grip the edge of the hole through a beam &c. c, and two internal ridges e which grip the cable d and form a cavity f preferably filled with plastic material. A plurality of holes may be provided through a single gland to take a corresponding number of cables. These holes may be tapered, and may be blanked solid at one end by a thin wall which may be pierced as the holes are required. Instead of two external flanges b, the end of the gland may be threaded into the casing as shown in Fig. 5, or held therein by a nut s as shown in Fig. 6. The outer end of the gland may be conical to grip the sheathing l, Fig. 5, of the cable, and, in the case where armouring m is used, such armouring is disposed over the gland and connected to the casing by a metal sleeve r. The conical cavity may be filled with a plastic sealing compound or by an adaptor with holes for a number of cables. Fig. 6 shows the application to the insulation and sealing of the end of a paper-insulated cable l. The thimble or rod t which is sweated to the conductor passes through an insulating gland u with internal ribs e which is screwed on to the end of the elastic gland and forms therewith a container for the sealing compound f. Fig. 8 shows the connection between two cables enclosed by an insulating tube v and two end glands a screwed therein.
