Abstract

868,047. Two-part couplings. BENDIX CORPORATION. Nov. 12, 1959 [April 24, 1959], No. 38445/59. Class 38 (1). [Also in Group XXIII] The plug 12 of a multi-contact connector comprises a composite insert 21 having a forward portion 35<SP>1</SP> made of stiff rubber or rubber-like material, a contact-retaining plate 36<SP>1</SP> made of stiff electrically insulating material, and a grommet 37<SP>1</SP> made of readily deformable rubber or rubber-like material. The parts of the insert are preferably bonded to each other and to the connector shell 20. Each pin contact 14, having been crimped to a wire 49<SP>1</SP>, is mounted in the insert 21 by means of a tool 65, Fig. 8. The contact includes a cylindrical groove 55 formed between a rear right-angled shoulder 56 and a forward formation 57 which has two oppositely facing ramp-like portions 59,61. With the contact in its normal position, the edges of an aperture 46<SP>1</SP> in the plate 361 engage the shoulder 56 and the portion 61, and the contact is retained in position during normal connecting and disconnecting operations. When necessary, the contact may be removed from the insert 21 by a tool 76 which is used to press the contact to the rear and out of the insert, Fig. 15. The plug has splines 25 which engage in grooves 26 formed in a hood 22 of a socket 12, and an outer nut 27 for retaining the plug and socket together has bayonet grooves 29 for receiving pins provided on the outer surface of the hood 22. The grommet 371 is compressed radially inwardly by the rear portion 40<SP>1</SP> of the plug housing, and a further grommet 41<SP>1</SP> is clamped against the wires by split clamping means 42<SP>1</SP> attached to arms 441 projecting from the housing portion 401. When the wires are of smaller diameter, the contacts may be provided with a ferrule for clenching on the insulation of the wire. As shown, the plug is suitable for wall mounting. The socket contacts are mounted in a similar manner to the plug contacts. Specification 832,869 is referred to.
