A vice comprises a front end block 32 fixed to one end of a base-plate 11 and carrying a first jaw 36, a rear slide 61 mounted on the base-plate 11 and releasably locked in adjusted position by spring biased pawls 102, 103 on the rear block which engage respectively with teeth 30, 31 provided on opposite longitudinal sides of the base-plate 11, a front slide 60 movably mounted on the base and carrying a second jaw 71, the front slide 60 and rear slide 61 being connected by springs 92, 93 which normally bias the front slide against the rear slide but which allow the front slide to move relatively to the rear slide. The pawls 102, 103 are adapted to be swung about screws 106, 107 by a pair of push rods 117, 118 which are operatively engaged by a rotatable cam member 122 having a pair of diametrically disposed cam surfaces 132. 133, which engage the inner ends of the push rods when the pawls are in locking engagement with the base 11, Fig. 5 (not shown). The cam member 122 has a second pair of diametrically disposed cam surfaces 134, 135 which are adapted to engage the inner ends of the push rods 117, 118 and move the push rods outwardly to release the pawls and permit the slides to be moved on the base, to another position when the handle 123 is moved to the dotted line position 136 (Fig. 1). The front slide 60 is provided with a roller 142 journalled on a vertical pin 143 and biased into engagement with the cam 122 by the springs 92, 93. Movement of the handle 123 to the position 152 (Fig. 1) causes the front slide 60 to move away from the rear slide 61 and brings the rear jaw 71 into operative engagement with the workpiece to be clamped. Each jaw 36, 71 has a vertical work engaging surface and an inclined surface which engages with a corresponding inclined surface on the front block 32 and front slide 64 respectively the jaws being yieldably biased to a position above the base when in an inoperative position.
