Abstract

955,467. Work-holders. G. F. STAPLES. Sept. 29, 1960 [July 4, 1959], No. 23039/59. Headings B3B and B3K. A work-holder comprises a base 10 having securing lugs 11 and keys 55, a fixed jaw 15 keyed to the base at 13, and a sliding jaw 16. Jaw 16 is secured to a member 19 slidable in a slot 25 and against a surface 22 in the base. A jaw actuating rod 26 is dowelled to member 19 at 27, and carries a spring 28 to urge jaw 16 into its open position. A work stop 34 is secured to the base by an adjustable stirrup 35, and passes through an aperture 33 in the rod. A boss 43 secured to the base carries balls 41 which engage arcuate helical cam tracks 40 in a cam 39 rotatable on the rod by a handle 42. In operation handle 42 is brought forwardly down from the position of Fig. 1, to bring balls 41 into the shallow end of tracks 40. A stop 30 is retracted from end 32 of member 19, and nuts 44 are retracted to allow spring 28 to open jaw 16 and the workpiece is inserted between the jaws. Nuts 44 are screwed up to cam 39 and stop 30 is screwed inwardly until it is just clear of end 32 to limit subsequent movement of jaw 16. Upward movement of handle 42 will move jaw 16 into the clamping position due to balls 41 riding up cam tracks 40. Cam 39 has opposite hand cam tracks on each side to allow reversal of the cam for opposite hand work-holders to enable handle 42 to be moved in the same direction irrespective of the hand of the work-holder. A slidable template 48 can be used for locating previously machined faces on the work, in the required position for subsequent machining. Specification 773,882 is referred to.
