Abstract

1,009,859. Rolling. UNITED ENGINEER. ING & FOUNDRY CO. June 26, 1962 [Oct- 20, 1961], No. 24484/62. Heading B3M. [Also in Division F2] A rolling mill is adapted to house one of a number of pairs of rolls of different lengths, the chock assemblies of the rolls being engageable by beams extending through the windows of the mill frames. Work rolls 22 and 23, Fig. 1, are mounted in chocks 17 and 18, the lower chocks resting on a beam 25 while the upper chocks are urged upwardly against a beam 24 by the arms 48 of a fluid pressure balancing mechanism 46. The beams support the chocks of rolls of differing lengths and allow axial movement of the chocks. Motor driven pairs of screws 35 and 37 act on the beams and serve to adjust the roll spacing. To change the rolls the upper beam 24 is raised by screws 37 until fluid pressure operated latches 59, Fig. 2, are moved inwardly to support the beam, and both sets of chocks are slid axially along the beams, projections 27 of the beam 25 engaging recesses in the upper chocks to support the roll 22. Laterally adjustable idle vertical rolls 77 and 78 are provided, and the couplings 63 and 64 for driving the work rolls are axially adjustable by a motordriven screw and provided with a balancing mechanism. A chock 17, Fig. 3, in plan, is secured by a screw 103 to a fixed yoke 105 extending across a housing window. For larger rolls a U-shaped yoke is employed, projections 111 of the chock being guided in the yoke to prevent rotation of the chock. Fluid pressure pistons 112 give axial adjustment of the roll after loosening nuts 107 and 108. Bars 96 extend from the adjustable chock 17 to a freely mounted chock 18, extensions of these bars forming exit and entry guides (Fig. 9, not shown). A thrust bearing 86 is provided with blocks 92 and 95 and an adjustable wedge 93 such that slight vertical movement of the bearing takes place when the babitt bearing 19 wears, vertical forces on the thrust bearing thus being avoided. Roll adjustment is limited by stops 55 and 56, Fig. 2, on the frames.
