Abstract

639,502. Rolling. BRIGHTSIDE FOUNDRY & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and UDALL, W. Aug. 3, 1948, No. 20531. [Class 83 (iv)] In a rolling-mill the upper roll 1 is held against a thrustrod 5 by a pair of adjustable spring - tensioned suspension rods 15, 15a, which are spaced from said rod at opposite sides thereof and are carried by a suspension head 17 to which they may be locked against movement in a direction to release the tension of springs 23, 23a, said suspension head being supported by the upper one 20 of a pair of coaxially disposed worm-gears 9, 20, by which it may be raised or lowered over a screw 18 carried by and rotatable with the lower worm-gear 9 in coaxial alignment with the thrust-rod. The suspension rods may be locked to the suspension head 17 by locknuts 26, 26a or the rods may be slotted, 28, for wedges and cotters. Rotation of the thrust-rod 5 by means of the worm 11 effects vertical movement of the rod through a nut 6 and a corresponding movement of the combined nut and worm-wheel 20 carrying the cross-head on the screw 18. When it is required to change the rolls, nuts 26, 26a, which are normally slackened back clear of the cross-head, are screwed up to engage the cross-head, thereby locking the suspension gear assembly and preventing release of the spring tension. The worm 22 is then turned to cause the assembly to move bodily downwards over the screw 18 until the hooked ends 16b, 16c of the suspension rods are clear of pins 16, 16a, which pins are then withdrawn, and the suspension assembly raised by operation of the worm-wheel 9, until the hooked ends and the end of the thrust-rod 5 are clear of the roll chock 3 and the thrust-pad 8 respectively. The roll and chock assembly is then removed and replaced by a new one. A reverse sequence of operations is then performed until the roll and chock assembly is fully suspended with the same spring pressure as before. The lower part of the thrust-rod 5 is protected from dirt &c. by a telescopic shield 14.
