Abstract

Método para tratar una región elegida expuesta de un artículo metálico no-alotrópico con el objeto de mejorar las propiedades físicas de dicha región, que consiste en: (a) Elegir el metal no-alotrópico de dicho artículo de modo que tenga una conductividad térmica de, por lo menos, 0,25 calorías/cm 2/cm/segundo/ºC, (b) dirigir un haz de alta energía hacia una región descubierta de dicho artículo para calentar dicho artículo en una primera zona y para fundir dicho artículo en una segunda zona dentro de dicha primera zona hasta una profundidad predeterminada, facilitando dicho haz un nivel de energía en la superficie de contacto con dicho artículo de, por lo menos 10.000 vatios/cm , (c) controlar la superficie de dicha región de contacto del haz, el nivel de energía del haz y la velocidad de desplazamiento de dicho haz a lo largo de dicho artículo para limitar dicha primera zona a un volumen predeterminado y asegurar una velocidad de calentamiento rápida predeterminada de dicha primera zona, y(d) proporcionar la masa de dicho artículo con relación al volumen de dicha primera zona para obtener una velocidad de enfriamiento de auto-temple rápida de dicha primera zona cuando se suprime de ella la influencia de dicho haz, con lo cual se obtiene por lo menos en dicha segunda zona una estructura de granos finos y de partículas finas.
