Definitions
- the invention relates to a pyrotechnic active mass according to claim 1, comprising a fuel, an oxidizing agent for the fuel, a combustion accelerator and optionally a binding agent.
- Ferrocene is known in the art as a catalyst in rocket propellants. However, ferrocene accelerates the combustion of the rocket propellant by a maximum of around 20%.
- high-performance active compounds for pyrotechnic infrared targets are known.
- the high-performance active compounds described there each comprise two different fuels.
- From the DE 43 37 071 C1 a continuously burning pyrotechnic smoke set is known in which compounds of graphite serve as additional set components.
- a high-intensity pyrotechnic infrared deception flare is known with a region of separate pieces of a pyrotechnic composition pressed in a compact, bubble-free manner.
- a gas developing composition which contains, as main components, hydrazodicarbonamide as an oxidizable substance and an oxy acid salt as an oxidizing agent.
- Kinematic pyrotechnic decoy targets are usually constructed in such a way that the active material is burned off inside the active material.
- a combustion channel is usually arranged in the middle of the active material. The amount of active mass that can be provided in a certain volume is reduced by the combustion channel.
- More advantageous for a kinematic pyrotechnic decoy is a structure in which the active mass burns from one end face, because such a structure is simpler and more active mass can be accommodated per unit volume by eliminating the combustion channel.
- Such a so-called forehead burner works more reliably and is easier and faster to light than an indoor burner designed effective mass. So far, however, there is no active material that burns off quickly enough to function as a decoy in such a structure.
- a decoy is usually around 150 mm long and should burn for a maximum of 5 seconds. If the decoy target is designed as a forehead burner, the burn rate would therefore have to be at least 30 mm / s in order to maintain the desired burn time. However, conventional effective masses for decoy targets burn at a maximum speed of 12 mm / s. So-called burn-up catalysts can be used to accelerate the burn-up. However, the known burn-up catalyst ferrocene only accelerates the burn-up by about 20%. The object of the present invention is therefore to provide a pyrotechnic active material with a combustion accelerator which enables the active material to burn more quickly than the known ferrocene.
- a pyrotechnic active mass comprising a fuel, an oxidizing agent for the fuel, a burn-off accelerator and optionally a binding agent.
- a binder can be omitted if another component of the active composition has a binding property.
- the burn-off accelerator is in the form of particles which are distributed in the active material, the burn-off accelerator being a solid which can be expanded by at least a factor of 2 by supplying heat. The expansion of the solid does not change the chemical reaction of the active compound when it is burned off, but rather the structure of the active compound when it burns off, in a purely physical manner. By expanding the solid with the supply of heat, the active mass on the burning surface is crumbled, so that the burning area is enlarged.
- the burn-off accelerator means that considerably higher burn-up rates can be achieved than with known chemical burn-up catalysts. Chemical modifications of the active compound are not necessary for the introduction of the purely physically acting burn-off accelerator. The burn-off accelerator can thus be combined with all known active compounds.
- the active compound according to the invention can be an active compound for a decoy target or a fuel.
- the combustion accelerator can also be used in combination with chemical or any other catalysts. This enables even higher burn rates to be achieved.
- Another advantage of the active composition according to the invention is that the combustion accelerator contained therein does not react with conventional fuels, oxidizing agents and binders at the usual storage temperatures and thus does not impair the shelf life of the active composition.
- Black body targets can be designed as forehead burners with the active compound according to the invention. This means that the entire available volume of a decoy target can be used because no recess is required in the active material for the active material to burn off as an internal burner and for ignition. A firing paste required in previous decoy active masses is not required for the active mass according to the invention.
- the particles are evenly distributed in the active composition: this results in a more even and predictable, rapid burn-off.
- the particles can have an average grain size in the range from 0.01 mm to 6 mm, in particular 0.1 mm to 5 mm.
- the combustion accelerator can be a solid which can be expanded by at least a factor of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 or 500 by supplying heat.
- the erosion accelerator can be contained in the active composition in a proportion of 0.1 to 10% by weight, in particular 1 to 5% by weight.
- the combustion accelerator is an expandable graphite or a sodium silicate.
- Expanded graphite that has not yet expanded has, in addition to its expanding effect, especially when it is coarse-grained expandable graphite, a heat-conducting effect. It can conduct heat from the flame into the still unburned active material and thereby further accelerate the burn-off.
- Another effect of expanded graphite is that expanded graphite forms a heat-insulating layer on the surface of the active material. This layer lasts the heat returns to the surface and at the same time glows in a flame burning above the surface. Both effects and the thermal conduction of the expanded graphite that has not yet expanded lead back heat from the flame to the surface of the active material. This further accelerates the burning of the active material.
- the active composition contains a heat-conducting additive. It can also contain a porous additive.
- Heat-conducting additives accelerate combustion by conducting heat from the flame into the active material.
- the additive comprises carbon fibers.
- the carbon fibers are preferably bundled.
- the additive preferably comprises charcoal and / or activated charcoal. Carbon fibers conduct heat with their first end into the active material while their second end is in the flame.
- a pore is created in the active mass in the area of the first ends of the carbon fibers, since the active mass surrounding the respective carbon fiber is gasified by the introduced heat.
- the pores formed in the active material enlarge its surface and thereby accelerate its burn-off.
- pore-like cavities are present as a result of the bundling, since the fibers each have a round cross section and therefore cannot lie completely flush with one another.
