Definitions
- the invention relates to an active mass for a pyrotechnic decoy with high emissivity with a fuel, an additive consisting essentially of carbon, an oxidizing agent for the fuel and optionally a binder.
- a pyrotechnic sham target for infrared targets which comprises first particles comprising a first fuel, second particles comprising the first or a second fuel, a first fuel oxidizer and a binder.
- first particles comprising a first fuel
- second particles comprising the first or a second fuel
- first fuel oxidizer and a binder.
- the first particles are designed so that they burn faster after ignition of the decoy target active in air than the second particles.
- the second particles are designed to burn in the air for at least 10 ms.
- the two types of particles cause the first particles to react quickly with the oxidant and burn off within a primary flame while the second particles are ignited in the primary flame but do not burn off within the primary flame. Hot, burning second particles are expelled from the flame and continue to burn in the air without substantially reacting with the oxidant.
- the second particles may have an average diameter of 0.5 to 3 mm in this decoy target active mass.
- the EP 2 463 259 A2 and the DE 10 2010 053 783 A1 disclose a high performance active mass for pyrotechnic infrared targets with a first fuel, at least a second fuel, an oxidizer, and a binder.
- the first fuel and the oxidant are selected with respect to their redox potentials so that the oxidant can oxidize the first fuel after ignition in an exothermic reaction to form a primary flame and emission of infrared radiation.
- the second fuel is ignited in the reaction, heated and / or pyrolyzed and from the high performance active mass released.
- the second fuel is chosen such that its redox potential or the redox potential of at least one pyrolysis product of the second fuel is higher than the redox potential of the first fuel and that the heated or ignited second fuel or the pyrolysis product can burn in the air.
- the amount of oxidizing agent contained in the high-performance active mass is at most so large that it is just sufficient to completely oxidize the first fuel.
- the object of an active mass for a pyrotechnic decoy target is to simulate a fast-flying aircraft to an image-resolving infrared seeker head.
- the wavelength of the emitted radiation is also important.
- Conventional seekers detect the radiation in so-called A-band, i. H. at a wavelength of about 1.8 to 2.6 microns, and in the so-called B-band, d. H. at a wavelength of about 3.5 to 4.6 microns.
- the object of the present invention is to provide an active mass for a pyrotechnic decoy whose emissivity is particularly high and in particular higher than the emissivity of known decoy target active compositions.
- an active mass for a pyrotechnic decoy with high emissivity comprises a fuel, an additive consisting essentially of carbon, an oxidizing agent for the fuel and optionally a binder, wherein the additive is present in the form of particles, with a predominant number of the particles having a maximum extent in the range from 1 .mu.m to 200 ⁇ m, wherein the particles do not consist of graphite, wherein the active material does not comprise graphite fluoride as the oxidizing agent.
- the binder can be omitted if another component of the active material has a binding property.
- a maximum extent of a particle is understood here to be the length of the longest distance that can be laid by the particle. In the case of carbon nanotubes in the form of a cylinder, the maximum extent is therefore a diagonal through the cylinder and not around the nanometer-range cylinder diameter.
- the inventor of the present invention has recognized that, for a high emissivity in the desired wavelength range in the case of a particle consisting essentially of carbon, the size of the active material burns off emerging, radiation-emitting soot particles is crucial. It has proved to be particularly favorable when the soot particles are not smaller than 0.5 ⁇ m and not larger than 1.25 ⁇ m.
- the particles consisting essentially of carbon with a maximum extent in the range of 1 .mu.m to 200 .mu.m.
- the majority of the emitted radiation in the wavelength range of 2 to 5 microns.
- Another advantage of the active material according to the invention is that it shows a very high radiation power during combustion, because a very large part of the energy released during combustion of the active material is released in the form of radiation in the wavelength range of 2 to 5 ⁇ m.
- the active composition according to the invention makes it possible to dispense with graphite fluoride as an oxidizing agent for increasing the performance.
- Graphite fluoride is relatively expensive and may be difficult to obtain.
- the particles provided in the active material according to the invention accelerate the burning, d. H. increase the rate of burnup, as the radiant power through the particles increases, thereby radiating more heat onto the burning surface. Furthermore, this also makes the primary flame optically denser. This retains heat within the flame and further accelerates burnup.
- the active material according to the invention has a higher emissivity during combustion than the mixture of magnesium, Teflon® and the fluororubber Viton (MTV) commonly used.
- a further increase in the burning rate can be achieved in that the particles have a porosity or, when the active mass burns down, porous particles which essentially consist of carbon are formed.
- the porosity may be provided, for example, by an additive comprising charcoal or activated carbon.
- the additional radiation which is intensified by the additive to the burning surface, furthermore makes it possible to produce a relatively high proportion of the oxidizing agent Provide fuel in the active mass.
- the active material may have a higher energy content than without the additive.
- a predominant number of particles has a maximum extent in the range of 1 .mu.m to 100 .mu.m, in particular in the range of 5 .mu.m to 80 .mu.m, in particular in the range of 10 .mu.m to 70 .mu.m, in particular in the range of 30 to 60 ⁇ m, up.
- the effective mass may be designed so that it contains substantially no particles of the additive whose maximum extent is less than 1 micron and / or greater than 200 microns. This can be achieved for example by a corresponding screening of particles of the additive.
- the additive may comprise carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes, in particular multi-walled carbon nanotubes, charcoal or activated carbon.
- Carbon fibers and carbon nanotubes are particularly efficient because they act as a dipole antenna in the flame and thereby can radiate the combustion energy particularly efficiently. It is particularly advantageous if the oxidizing agent is chosen so that it can not oxidize the carbon, so that the carbon particles are oxidized only in the outer region of the flame formed during combustion by the atmospheric oxygen.
- Multi-walled carbon nanotubes are advantageous because the carbon skeleton of the nanotubes remains longer with an oxidation by atmospheric oxygen than with single-walled carbon nanotubes. With a proportion of 5 to 10% of carbon fibers or 5% carbon nanotubes, the radiant power of the active material according to the invention can be increased by about 30%.
- the fuel may comprise a metal, a semi-metal or a mixture or alloy of metals and / or semimetals or a mixture or alloy of at least one metal and at least one semimetal.
- the fuel may be aluminum, magnesium, titanium, zirconium, hafnium, calcium, lithium, niobium, tungsten, manganese, iron, nickel, cobalt, zinc, tin, lead, bismuth, tantalum, molybdenum, vanadium, boron, silicon, an alloy or Mixture of at least two of these metals or semi-metals, a zirconium-nickel alloy or mixture, an aluminum-magnesium alloy or mixture, a lithium-aluminum alloy or mixture, a calcium-aluminum alloy or mixture, a Iron-titanium alloy or blend, a zirconium-titanium alloy or blend, or a lithium-silicon alloy or blend.
- Titanium, zirconium, hafnium, niobium, tantalum, molybdenum and vanadium can form carbides with the carbon particles or resulting carbon black particles.
- the carbon serves as a further oxidizing agent for the metals mentioned.
- the resulting carbides are present as solids in the temperatures which arise when the active material burns off and emit radiation as the carbide particles.
- the binder may be a fluoroelastomer, especially a fluororubber such as Viton® from DuPont Performance Elastomers.
- the oxidizing agent may be a halogen-containing polymer, in particular polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or polychloroprene.
- the active material for accelerating the burn-up can contain a combustion catalyst, in particular ferrocene, iron acetonyl acetate or copper phthalocyanine.
- the oxidizing agent is chosen so that thereby carbon is not oxidized at a temperature which arises in a reaction of the oxidizing agent with the fuel.
- This allows the carbon for example with titanium, zirconium, hafnium, niobium, tantalum, molybdenum or vanadium, to form a carbide.
- compositions given below were prepared as follows: The dry components and 5 conductive rubber cubes were mixed in a 250 ml mixing container for one hour by means of a tumble mixer at 120 revolutions / minute. The resulting mixture was dumped into a stainless steel bowl, the rubber cubes removed, and the binder added was 3M Fluorel FC-2175 fluororubber as a 10% solution in acetone.
- the carbon nanotubes were not mixed directly with the other constituents but were previously dispersed in the 10% strength solution of the binder in acetone by means of ultrasound in order to ensure the most uniform possible distribution in the active material.
- the mass was stirred into a homogeneous dough and mixed until the acetone had evaporated to the point that the mass became granular. The resulting granules were dried at 50 ° C.
