Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for decontaminating the exhaust gases of a heat engine, of the type comprising an external envelope delimiting an exhaust gas circulation passage " and a particle filter mounted in said passage, said envelope comprising a transverse interruption along its entire periphery, which interruption separates the envelope into first and second successive sections, the first and second successive sections having ends engaged one inside the other, an outer end of the first section overlapping an inner end of the second section following part of the length of the circulation passage.
- Such devices are used, in particular for the depollution of diesel engines of motor vehicles.
- the catalytic purification device is adapted for the treatment of polluting emissions in the gas phase, while the particle filter is adapted to retain the soot particles emitted by the engine.
- the particulate filter operates in a succession of filtration and regeneration phases.
- the soot particles emitted by the engine are deposited on the upstream face of the filter.
- the soot particles essentially composed of carbon, are burned on the upstream face of the filter, in order to restore its original properties.
- a chemical agent lowering the combustion temperature of the soot is a catalytic additive containing one or more metallic constituents in the form of organometallic compounds. These will burn in the combustion chamber of the engine and will be deposited in the form of oxides within the soot particles on the upstream face of the particle filter.
- Patent application FR-2,787,137 describes a device for depolluting exhaust gases in which the means of access to the upstream face of the particle filter comprise an interruption of the envelope associated with removable means for connecting the two successive sections of the envelope. The two successive sections of the envelope are fitted with docking flanges. A strap surrounds the two flanges and ensures axial clamping of the flanges against each other.
- the object of the invention is to propose a pollution control device having a reduced bulk.
- the subject of the invention is a device for decontaminating the exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, of the aforementioned type, characterized in that the outer end of the first section comprises at its periphery at least one weakened zone allowing a variation in the section of said outer end of the first section.
- the depollution device comprises one or more of the following characteristics: - the device comprises several weakened zones distributed along the periphery of the first section, which zones define between them support tabs on the end interior of the second section,
- the or each tongue has a divergent edge formed at its free end, which edge progressively deviates from the second section towards its free end,
- the or each tongue has a boss projecting towards the second section, which boss is supported on the inner end of the second section, the ends of the first and second sections have complementary protruding and hollow profiles for axial retention of the first and second sections,
- the device comprises a strapping surrounding the first and second sections in their region of overlap
- the device comprises an O-ring interposed between the interior and exterior ends of the first and second sections,
- the device comprises a catalytic purification member, said transverse interruption being formed between the particle filter and the catalytic purification member, - the outer casing includes a tapping opening into said circulation passage upstream of the particle filter.
- the invention further relates to a method for dissociating the first and second sections of a device as defined above, characterized in that it comprises a step of injecting into said passage for the circulation of a fluid under pressure through said nozzle to urge the first and second sections in opposite directions.
- FIG. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along line II-II of the pollution control device of Figure 1;
- FIG. 3 is an enlarged view of the detail noted III of Figure 2;
- FIG. 4 is a partial view in longitudinal section of a section of the envelope of the frosting device
- - Figure 5 is a section on a larger scale of the boss of Figure 4 taken along the line VV;
- - Figure 6 is a partial view in longitudinal section of another section of the envelope of the pollution control device;
- - Figure 7 is a longitudinal sectional view of an alternative embodiment of a pollution control device according to the invention.
- - Figure 8 is a partial view on a larger scale of the detail noted
- the pollution control device 10 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, comprises a generally cylindrical exhaust 12 having, at one end, an inlet 14 and, at its other end, an outlet 16.
- a catalytic purification member 18 and a particle filter 20 separated by a free transition space 22 are arranged successively from the inlet to the outlet inside the pot 12.
- the exhaust 12 has an outer casing 23 delimiting a passage for the circulation of the exhaust gases through which the catalytic purification member 18 and the particle filter 20 are arranged.
- the catalytic purification member 18 is, for example, constituted by a gas-permeable structure covered with catalytic metals favoring the oxidation of combustion gases and / or the reduction of nitrogen oxides.
- the particulate filter 20 is made of a filtration material consisting of a monolithic ceramic or silicon carbide structure having sufficient porosity to allow the passage of exhaust gases. However, as known per se, the diameter of the pores is chosen to be small enough to retain particles, and in particular soot particles, on the upstream face of the filter.
- the particulate filter can also be produced from a ceramic foam, ceridite or silicon carbide. It can also consist of a cartridge filter or a sintered metal filter.
- the particle filter used here comprises for example a set of parallel channels divided into a first group of input channels and a second group of output channels. The inlet and outlet channels are staggered. The inlet channels open out onto the upstream section of the particulate filter and close off at the downstream section of the particulate filter.
- the outlet channels are closed on the upstream section of the particulate filter and open out on its downstream section.
- the outer envelope 23 is formed by a cylindrical wall 24 of substantially constant section.
- the pot At its inlet end, the pot has a divergent section 26 connecting an inlet pipe 28 to the cylindrical wall 24. Similarly, at its rear end, the cylindrical wall 24 is extended by a convergent section 30 ending in a pipe output 32 delimiting output 16.
- the exhaust gases first flow through the catalytic purification member 18 and then through the particle filter 20.
- Means of access to the upstream surface of the particle filter 20 are provided along the length of the envelope 23. They comprise a transverse interruption 34 of the envelope along its entire periphery and removable means 36 for connecting the two successive sections 38, 40 thus defined in the cylindrical wall 24 on either side of the interruption 34.
- the removable connection means 36 extend around the catalytic purification member 18.
- the end of the envelope section 40 is fitted inside the corresponding end of the envelope section 38.
- the ends of the envelope sections 38 and 40 overlap each other, the end of the upstream section 40, considering the normal flow direction of the flow in the circulation passage extending to the inside the end of the downstream section 38.
- the end of the upstream section 40 is designated by an interior end, while the end of the downstream section 38 is designated by its exterior end.
- the two sections 38 and 40 have identical sections.
- the tubular wall delimiting the section 38 has an enlarged end section 42 of generally cylindrical shape with a diameter greater than the diameter of the current part of the section 38.
- This enlarged section 42 forms the outer end of the adapted section to receive the inner end of the complementary section. It defines an internal shoulder 46 with the rest of the section 38.
- the outer end comprises at its periphery at least one weakened zone allowing a variation in the section of this end and more precisely a centripetal deformation of this end.
- the weakened zones consist of notches 50 distributed regularly at the outer end of the section along the outline thereof. These notches generally extend along generatrices of the enlarged section 42. They delimit tongues 52. The tongues 52 are defined only on the enlarged section 42.
- Each tab has in the vicinity of its free end an external deformation forming a peripheral bead 60 formed on all the tabs.
- This bead 60 defines a hollow profile forming a channel which opens inwards and is adapted to receive a complementary projecting profile formed on the other section.
- each tab has a raised edge 62 which diverges towards its free end. This edge gradually deviates from the axis of the section towards its end.
- a boss In the middle part of each tongue is provided a boss
- This boss 64 shown in detail in FIG. 5.
- This boss 64 is formed by an embossment of the wall deforming the latter inwards.
- the boss 64 projects towards the inside of the section 38, that is to say towards the axis of this section.
- the bosses 64 ensure a reduction in the contact surface between the sections 38 and 40 fitted.
- the section 38 also has a nozzle 70 adapted for receiving a glow plug, the active part of which is disposed opposite the upstream face of the particle filter.
- the complementary section 40 receiving the catalytic purification element is illustrated alone in FIG. 6. It comprises a main section 80 of constant section, extended towards the free end fitted into section 38, by a section 82 of reduced section . These two sections 80, 82 are ⁇ e- linked to each other by a peripheral groove 84 for receiving an O-ring 86 as illustrated in Figure 3. This groove opens outward. It is defined by a centripetal deformation of the sheet forming the section 40.
- the main section 80 finally has a peripheral bead 88 projecting outwards and adapted to be received in the channel delimited by the bead 60 of each notch.
- the distance repairing the shoulder 46 of the bead 60 on the first section 38 is equal to the distance separating the groove 84 from the bead 88.
- the bosses 64 are applied on the section 40 between the groove 84 and the bead 88.
- the surface of the section 40 on which the bosses are applied is smooth.
- the surface of the section 40 between the groove 84 and the bead 88 has recesses for receiving the bosses 64 thus ensuring angular positioning of the sections 38 and 40 by fitting the bosses into the recesses thanks to their complementary shape.
- a strapping 90 surrounds the interior and exterior sections in their overlapping region.
- the cercFage 90 comprises a tightening band 92 constituting an open loop whose two ends are connected to each other by a traction mechanism 94 comprising for example a tightening screw 94.
- This screw ensures a bringing together of the two ends of the strip 92.
- the strapping 90 ensures a radial deformation of the tongues, pressing them against the outer surface of the inner section. It also provides " compression of the O-ring 86, which improves the seal between the sections 38 and 40.
- the device 10 is first removed from the vehicle exhaust line.
- the traction mechanism 64 is first loosened, allowing the removal of the casing 46.
- an air supply hose under pressure is connected to one of the nozzles 70 after the spark plug initially present has been removed. Air under pressure, and in particular at a pressure of between 2 and 8 bars, is introduced into the exhaust volume in the space defined between the upstream face of the particle filter and the downstream face of the catalyst.
- the increase in pressure in this space leads, due to very large pressure drops caused by the particle filter and the catalytic purification element, to a separation of the two sections constituting the exhaust volume.
- the force resulting from the pressure is greater than the force necessary for the deformation of the tongues for the uncoupling of the complementary protruding and hollow profiles, as well as the force necessary for the rupture of any bonding, in particular due to the corrosion which may have taken place between the tabs and the outer surface of the inner end.
- the divergent edges 62 of each tongue allow the easy introduction of a tool forming a lever such as a screwdriver between each tongue and the internal end. .
- the opening of the envelope following the transverse interruption 34 allows access to the upstream face of the particle filter 20, this face being turned towards the purification member 18.
- An air or suitable fluid injection lance is applied downstream of the particle filter. Under the action of air or fluid flowing against the current through the particulate filter, the ash retained on the upstream surface of the filter is removed.
- the two sections of the device are reassembled.
- the divergent edges 62 facilitate the insertion of the internal section between the tongues by defining together a frustoconical surface favoring the guiding and the fitting of the internal section.
- the hoop 90 is then replaced.
- the device is then reassembled on the exhaust line of the vehicle.
- FIGS. 7 and 8 an alternative embodiment of a pollution control device marked 110.
- the device comprises an exhaust pipe 112 having an inlet 114 and an outlet 116 between which is placed a catalytic purification device 118 and a particle filter 120.
- the exhaust 112 forms an envelope 123. This has two successive sections 138, 140.
- the catalytic purification device 118 is received in the section 138 while the particle filter 120 is received in the section 140.
- the section 140 is fitted inside the corresponding end of the envelope section 138.
- the envelope section 138 has an enlarged end section 142 having a diameter greater than the current part of the section 138 in which the catalytic purification member 118 is received.
- the enlarged section is suitable for receiving the end of the envelope section 140.
- a shoulder 146 is defined between the enlarged section 142 and the current part of the section 138.
- the section 140 has a constriction 147 defining a shoulder 148 extending opposite the 'shoulder 146.
- An O-ring seal 149 is disposed between the two shoulders.
- the free end of the enlarged section 142 has weakened zones allowing a variation in the section of this end and more precisely a centripetal deformation of this end.
- the weakened zones consist of notches 150 distributed regularly at the outer end of the section along the contour thereof. These notches delimit tabs 152.
- the section 140 is generally of constant section. It has at its periphery, in line with the tongues 152 when the two sections are fitted, a peripheral bead consisting of a metal ferrule 154 added by welding to the wall of the section 140.
- This ferrule has in section a generally cylindrical connecting surface 156 extended by a cylindrical supporting surface 158 disposed away from the wall of the section 140.
- the supporting surface 158 is linked to the connecting surface 156 by a front generally tapered retainer 160.
- the support surface 158 has a folded edge 162 directed towards the wall 140 and kept away from the latter.
- the support surface 158 generally cylindrical is connected to the wall of the section 140 only by one side and extends overhanging along this wall.
- An interval 164 is delimited between the wall 140 and the bearing surface 158.
- the ferrule 154 forming the bead is linked to the wall of the section 140 by a weld 166 formed at the end of the connecting pad 156. This weld is formed on the side opposite the interlocking side of the two sections 138, 140.
- the tongues 152 are deformed radially towards the outside and are connected to the current part of the enlarged section 142 by a frustoconical section 170 delimiting a shoulder for the support of a toroidal seal. 172 received between this frustoconical section and the folded rim 162.
- each tongue has a constriction 174 towards the inside, which delimits an inclined surface 176 suitable for resting on the frustoconical retaining front 160.
- This inclined surface 176 is extended by a raised edge 178.
- the tracks 176 , 178 delimit between them a channel of revolution generally in V.
- the device comprises a hoop 190 comprising a tightening band 192 and means (not shown) for pulling this band.
- the tightening strip has a flat main surface 194 bearing on the main surface of the tongues 152.
- the strip 192 On its lateral edge, the strip 192 has a peripheral constriction 196 having a shape suitable for engaging in the constriction 174 of each of the tongues . More precisely, the constriction 196 generally has in section a V-shape suitable for being applied to the tracks 176 and 178 of the tongues and thus keeping the constricted end of the tongues in abutment on the frustoconical surface 160 of the bead 154.
- the main surface of the tongues is supported on the elastic bearing surface 158 of the ferrule 152.
- the presence of a seal 172 interposed between the shoulder defined by the frustoconical surface 176 and the bead 154 ensures satisfactory sealing.
- the bearing surface 158 extending in overhang above the wall delimiting the section 140, the latter provides an elasticity guaranteeing satisfactory retention of the hoop 190.
