- the brake shoes usually consist either of aluminum bronze (CuAl) or of cast iron (GGG). With aluminum brake shoes a good braking effect is achieved. The heat released by the braking is quickly dissipated, but the wear is considerable with long braking distances. The brake shoes made of cast iron have a less good braking effect. They are less worn out, but are less able to dissipate the brake heat. In addition, wear on the governor rope must be expected.
