Definitions
- Plastic products made from a wide variety of polymer materials are today it’s hard to imagine an industry without it. This applies to both the industrial Area as well as the consumer goods industry too.
- the insufficient resistance of unstabilized plastics to UV radiation shows e.g. through loss of gloss, formation of surface cracks, chalking and Deterioration of mechanical strength properties.
- Occur in polymers modified by incorporation of light stabilizers basically, the same phenomena, only more or less delayed on.
- polypropylene is particularly sensitive to UV rays. This is all the more unfortunate, especially since this inexpensive material in the form of polypropylene fabrics is used on a large scale for the production of flexible bulk goods containers (FIBCs), which are inevitably exposed to external climatic influences as transport containers. An incomprehensible or uncontrolled drop in the mechanical strength values of FIBC's, since the containers can also be used to transport hazardous goods, undoubtedly entails major safety risks and accident risks. In order to largely rule this out, the users have agreed on test methods that provide information about the relationship between UV radiation, the strength values of plastics and the resulting guideline values for the service life and use cycles of a flexible bulk goods container.
- the fabric material of a FIBC which has been exposed to UV-B radiation corresponding to approx. 150 kLy of natural UV radiation over an exposure time of 144 hours, should still have a residual breaking strength of 50% of the initial breaking strength. After reaching this limit, the container poses a safety risk and should be withdrawn from circulation. Since reliable statements about the current damage are currently can only be obtained using destructive measurement methods on the actual object itself, it would be very helpful in practice if the quantification of the damage state Measuring scales "or Indicators "would be available whose exclusively visually detectable changes in properties correlate with the strength values of the packaging material. Possible solutions for this are shown, for example, in PCT publication WO 94/13559. Thus, indicators are described which provide information about the status of the UV damage to the packaging, either through a change in color or through material degradation in the form of breaking, crumbling or the like.
- Both indicator versions are separate indicator elements in Form of foils, tapes, threads, nonwovens or fabrics that are not part of it of the actual packaging material and either as indicator flags UV-exposed areas of the FIBC sewn on or as threads or ribbons in the Container tissue can also be shot. If the said Indicator flags for the rough handling of the FIBC not of this during the Transport cycles torn off or in any form, e.g. when stacking the Bulk material containers are covered, this method alone hides in the Selection of reliable reference points for the attachment of the Indicator elements Uncertainties that should not be underestimated.
- the present invention is therefore based on the object of proposing a flexible bulk goods container which is largely made of a material whose material damage resulting from the action of radiation, in particular from UV radiation, is visible at any point of the container is displayed "or is readable “and which, despite the material damage, still functions at least for a limited period of time.
- the bulk container according to the invention consists of a textile plastic fabric, whose individual threads or tapes are built up in multiple layers, whereby on a carrier layer forming the inside of the container at least one outer Functional layer is applied by exposure to UV radiation over time degrades photochemically, whereby the bond to the carrier layer is gradually lost goes and ultimately the carrier layer is exposed, which the user of the Bulk container signals that its mechanical strength is below one permissible guide value has dropped and therefore the container for safety reasons is to be withdrawn from circulation.
- the flexible bulk container (FIBC) ( 1 ) outlined in FIG. 1 represents a simple embodiment variant from the large number of FIBC constructions on the market. In this case it consists of a hull ( 2 ) made of tubular fabric, which has been given a basic cubic shape by the sewn-in square underbody ( 3 ) and the top shelf ( 4 ).
- the top floor ( 4 ) Compared to the flat, closed sub-floor ( 3 ) forming the base of the FIBC, the top floor ( 4 ) has a round filling opening ( 5 ) into which a cylindrical filler neck ( 6 ) is incorporated, which after filling the bulk goods container in the form shown a tie ( 7 ) is tied.
- the fuselage ( 2 ), underbody ( 3 ) and top floor ( 4 ) consist of fabrics based on high-strength plastic threads or tapes, the grammage for the individual components being the same or different.
- lifting loops ( 8 ) are sewn onto the four corners of its body ( 2 ).
- Fabric strips of the construction shown in FIG. 2 are available in the simplest form for the production of the bulk goods container according to the invention.
- the composite combination must in principle fulfill the basic condition that the outer functional layer ( 12 ) must have a higher UV resistance than the carrier layer ( 11 ). This is achieved when the ribbon assembly is formed in the simplest form from one and the same polymer material, such as polypropylene, by incorporating UV stabilizers into the functional layer ( 12 ).
- Both the amount of stabilizer in the functional layer ( 12 ) and the layer thicknesses of the functional layer ( 12 ) and the carrier layer ( 11 ) are matched to one another in such a way that UV radiation of the functional layer ( 12 ) with UV-B rays over a period of approx 144 hours, which corresponds to about 150 kLy of natural radiation, the photochemical degradation of which causes by Exfoliation "of the functional layer ( 12 ) on the one hand results in the exposure of the carrier layer ( 11 ) and on the other hand the reduction in the mechanical strength of the composite material, the latter still having to have at least 50% of the initial strength of the undamaged composite.
- UV stabilizer systems on the market such as absorbers, Quencher, hydroperoxide decomposer or radical scavenger used depends on various factors, such as the particular polymer used, the Effect and compatibility of polymer and UV stabilizer substance, the respective application area etc.
- Coextrusion is the preferred production method for the two-layer fabric tapes according to FIG. 2 , especially when the backing layer ( 11 ) and functional layer ( 12 ) consist of identical polymers that differ only in the UV stabilizer content, which means that adhesion problems can generally be neglected .
- the layer structure of a fabric ribbon represented by FIG. 3 expands the production of customized bulk material containers for each application by the possibility of combining different materials.
- the fabric ribbon in turn consists of a carrier layer ( 21 ) and a functional layer ( 22 ) and an intermediate layer ( 3 ) embedded between them.
- the carrier layer ( 1 ) corresponds to the inside, the functional layer ( 23 ) to the UV-stabilized outside of the bulk goods container according to the invention
- the intermediate layer ( 23 ) primarily serves as an adhesion promoter.
- Suitable adhesion promoters enable today in the coextrusion process the permanent connection of polymers based on low-density polyethylene, High-density polyethylene, linear low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, Ethylene vinyl acetate, ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers, ionomers, polystyrene etc. to the multilayered fabric ribbon.
- the intermediate layer ( 23 ) in the inventive sense can largely also be used as a component of the UV indicator system.
- a photo-activating additive is added to the adhesion promoter in order to program its adhesive effect more or less in advance. Due to the covering of the intermediate layer ( 23 ) by means of the UV-stabilized functional layer ( 22 ), the photo-activating substance incorporated in the adhesion promoter remains inactive until the photochemical degradation of the outer functional layer ( 22 ) has removed its protective effect.
- photo-activating additives for example based on ketones, benzophenone derivatives or oxidized polyethylene waxes
- ketones for example based on ketones, benzophenone derivatives or oxidized polyethylene waxes
- oxidized polyethylene waxes for example based on ketnes, benzophenone derivatives or oxidized polyethylene waxes
- the intermediate layer (23) are located next to the example mentioned co-extrusion such as extrusion coating and the Lamintechnik. In latter then consists of suitable adhesives whose adhesive force photo activating in the manner described above by adding substances is preprogrammed.
- the three-layer composite according to FIG. 3 offers the option of incorporating said additives exclusively into the functional layer ( 22 ) and the contrasting coloring only to the to limit the adhesion-promoting intermediate layer ( 23 ).

Abstract
