Definitions

  • the invention relates to a roof rack for motor vehicles.
  • DE-33 26 789 A1 shows a roof rack of the generic type.
  • this known roof rack two spars extending across a vehicle roof are provided, wherein in at least two recesses in the vehicle roof, a fastening element can be introduced, which is connected to a spar via a connecting element
  • the downward angled ends of each spar are braced against the vehicle roof with the interposition of a rubber strip, which is intended to produce a shock absorber effect.
  • the rubber strips used to support the spar ends can only have a shock-absorbing effect in the direction perpendicular to the roof surface, but not in a direction running parallel to the roof surface.
  • a roof gallery usually consists of two roof rails, which essentially extend in the direction of travel and run at least approximately parallel, each consisting of at least two support feet, which are supported on the roof skin of a vehicle and fastened to the roof rail of the vehicle by means of fastening bolts penetrating the roof skin, and a spar connecting the support feet to one another.
  • the support feet are generally designed as zinc die-cast parts.
  • FR-A-2 288 667 means for damping (destruction) of the kinetic energy of a load under a predetermined deceleration force are known, but this teaching does not relate to a technical subject area comparable to a roof rack of the type mentioned and also is not easily transferable to roof rack. According to the teaching of FR-A-2 288 667 it is provided that a truck with a chassis frame carries a loading platform with the interposition of friction plates. The friction plates are intended to prevent a relative movement in normal operation, but to allow it with a predetermined deceleration force.
  • the present invention is based on the object of providing a roof rack of the type mentioned at the beginning, which is intended to help prevent further consequences of the accident in a simple and cost-effective manner.
  • the object is solved by the features of claim 1 or 8.
  • the roof rack consists on the one hand of support feet which can be fastened to the roof panel and of longitudinal spars or crossbars which in turn can be fastened to the support feet, at least two support feet each carrying a longitudinal spar or a crossbar.
  • the shock-absorbing means are arranged in the connection area between a longitudinal spar and at least one of the support feet or between a cross member and the support feet supporting the latter. The shock-absorbing means are provided in order to dampen (destroy) the kinetic energy of the roof load when the vehicle brakes abruptly.
  • the measures according to the invention ensure that when a vehicle abruptly brakes, the kinetic energy of the payload located on the car roof is destroyed, or at least absorbed, damped or converted.
  • Deformation bodies in each case a cylinder and a piston having shock absorbers or also friction brakes can be arranged as shock-absorbing means in the respective connection area.
  • a deformation body can consist of a material which collapses under a defined application of force, for example blown polyethylene, acrylic butadiene styrene or the like. It is also possible to provide a crumple body made of a metallic hollow body made of expanded metal-like mesh material or a metal foil material provided with a honeycomb structure. Outstanding energy absorption properties are achieved through such a body or a body with a similar effect.
  • the shock-absorbing means designed as a deformation body is arranged on a pin located on a support foot and limited at one end by an annular surface, which also receives a free end region of a tubular longitudinal spar, so that the deformation body between the annular surface and the front end of the longitudinal spar sits.
  • shock-absorbing means designed as a shock absorber with the cylinder in a blind bore of a support leg and with the piston is arranged in a blind bore of a longitudinal spar or transverse spar spaced from the support foot by a free space.
  • the space between the support leg and the longitudinal spar should be bridged by a facing bush made of easily deformable material.
  • the support feet are formed with plug pins which engage in the ends of the tubular longitudinal spars and which are bounded at one end by stops for the circular ring surfaces forming the spar ends, the circular ring surfaces as well as the front ends of the Longitudinal bars are conical in order to enable axial movement of the longitudinal bars in the event of abrupt vehicle braking with energy-absorbing deformation work on the bar end regions.
  • This measure which is particularly cost-effective with great efficiency, can be supplemented in that the end regions of the longitudinal spars have a reduction in wall thickness due to material being removed on the inside (material recess).
  • the invention can also be advantageously realized in that the support feet are each formed in two parts and consist of a lower part anchored to the vehicle and an upper part slidably attached thereto, a friction brake being formed or arranged between the upper part and the lower part.
  • Fig. 1 shows the roof panel 1 of a vehicle with a roof rack arranged thereon.
  • the latter is formed from two railings, consisting of support feet 2 and longitudinal bars 3 and from cross bars 4, indicated only by dash-dotted lines, which are fastened to the longitudinal bars 3.
  • the railings extend at least approximately parallel to one another and run in the direction of travel of the vehicle.
  • Fig. 2 shows a roof rack arranged on the roof panel 1 of a vehicle, which consists of cross bars 5 crossing the roof panel 1 and supporting feet 2 located at their ends. 1 are fastened to roof spars of a vehicle by means of fastening bolts passing through the roof skin, which is generally known and therefore not shown in detail, the support feet 2 in the embodiment according to FIG. 2 are on the gutter or in a roof channel 6 attached in a known and therefore not shown manner.
  • a transport container 7, indicated by dash-dotted lines, is attached to the crossbars 5.
  • FIG. 3 to 6 each show a detail of the embodiment of FIG. 1 in different embodiments.
  • a support leg 2 and an end region of one of the longitudinal spars 3 cooperating with this are shown in each case.
  • the support leg 2 according to FIG. 3 is seated on the roof panel 1 of the vehicle and held on the vehicle by fastening elements 8.
  • the support foot 2 has a plug pin 9, over which a deformation body 10 and adjoining it a free end of the tubular spar 3, which is tubular here, is pushed.
  • a deformation body 10 can or should also be arranged between the support foot, not shown, and the other free end of the longitudinal spar 3, so that recoil forces can be absorbed.
  • Fig. 4 shows a support leg 2 sitting on the roof sheet 1 with a plug pin 9, onto which the free one end of the longitudinal spar 3 is pushed.
  • annular surface 11 designed as a cone.
  • the free end of the longitudinal spar 3 resting on the annular surface 11 is also conical.
  • the free end area of the longitudinal spar 3 is reduced in wall thickness by a material recess 12 on the spar side.
  • Fig. 5 shows an embodiment with a support leg 2, which receives the cylinder 14 of a shock absorber in a blind hole-like bore 13.
  • the piston 15 of the shock absorber engages in a blind hole 16 in the longitudinal strut 3.
  • a free space 17 is formed between the support foot 2 and the longitudinal spar 3, which is bridged by a facing sleeve 18.
  • a two-part design is provided for the support leg 2, namely a lower part 21 seated on the roof sheet 1 and an upper part 22 connected to it.
  • the lower part 21 is held on the vehicle by fastening elements 8 and the upper part 22 on the lower part 21 by fastening elements 19.
  • a friction brake 20 is formed between the lower part 21 and the upper part 22, which permits a relative movement between the parts 21 and 22 in the event of an overload.
  • the friction brake 20 can be formed by roughening the abutting surfaces of the lower and upper part, but can also consist of a friction lining. It is advisable to let the fastening elements 19 cooperate with spring means, not shown, which press the parts 21 and 22 together.
  • FIG. 7 shows one of the support feet 2 according to FIG. 2 and an end region of the cross bars 5.
  • the cylinder 14 of a shock absorber is anchored in a blind hole 13 and the free end region of the rail 5 is fastened to the piston 15 of the shock absorber, for example by means of a threaded pin 23. It is advisable to equip all four support feet 2 of the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 2 with shock absorbers in accordance with FIG. 7.
