Definitions

  • the invention relates to a tufting needle, the shaft adjoining a piston is flat, has a thread groove and near its tip has an elongated eye in the direction of the needle axis, which has a curved upper eye edge at its end facing away from the tip, one side surface of the shaft is chamfered to one of its longitudinal edges by a chamfer and to its other longitudinal edge by a bias cut that extends into the eye region.
  • Such tufting needles are either fixed individually in the desired division on a needle bar or combined with several identical needles to form needle modules, which in turn are then fixed on the needle bar,
  • a tufting needle When using such a tufting needle, it is pushed through a base fabric, the thread to be processed running through the eye of the needle. After piercing the base fabric, a looper engages the area between a side surface of the needle and the associated thread by a movement essentially transverse to the needle axis, in order to hold the thread in place when the needle moves backwards and in this way to form loops which then can be cut depending on the desired goods.
  • the looper assigned to each needle is still pivoted transversely to the needle during the downward movement, the chamfer provided on the needle helping to keep the wear and tear when the looper and needle interact.
  • the looper glides over the bas cut in the area of the eye. This cut is used in the cooperation between the needle and the looper to avoid elevations in the needle during the retraction of the needle, which could lead to the looper jumping and to sudden stress.
  • the object of the present invention is now to create a tufting needle which excludes such errors even in particularly fast-running tufting machines.
  • the invention provides for a tufting needle of the type mentioned at the outset that the area of the upper edge of the eye which is furthest away from the tip is offset relative to the central axis of the eye in the direction of the chamfer.
  • the formation of the eye according to this innovation means that the thread in the eye when the needle interacts with the looper, at least with its larger part, does not lie in the area of the bias cut. It is therefore not possible for the thread to move towards the looper when there is a tensile load.
  • the tufting needle according to the invention can be designed in such a way that the area of the upper edge of the eye which is furthest away from the tip is offset by 10 to 35% of the width of the eye in relation to the central axis of the eye in the direction of the chamfer.
  • the optimal design of the eye of the needle with regard to its upper edge is primarily dependent on the yarn to be used.
  • the tufting needle can be designed in such a way that the furthest area of the upper edge of the eye facing away from the tip is offset by 20% of the width of the eye in relation to the central axis of the eye in the direction of the chamfer.
  • the tufting needle according to FIG. 1 has a shaft 1 which has a fillet 3 in the area in which the needle cooperates with a looper 2.
  • the looper 2 moves in the direction of the arrow 4 and then comes to lie between the shaft 1 of the needle and a thread 5.
  • the chamfer 3 is preceded by a chamfer 6. This chamfer 6 causes the side face of the needle shown in FIG. 1 to rise slightly as seen in the direction of movement of the looper 2.
  • the shaft 1 of the needle is also provided with an eyelet 7 which is elongated in the direction of the needle axis 8 and is symmetrical to it.
  • the eye 7 has an upper curved edge 9, a front edge 10, a rear edge 11 and a lower edge 12. The distance between the front edge 10 and the rear edge 11 corresponds to the width of the eye.
  • the shaft 1 ends in a needle tip 13.
  • a bias cut 14 is provided in the area of the eye 7 and the needle tip 13, which represents an inclined surface that slopes away from the eye area to the rear longitudinal edge of the needle.
  • This bias cut 14 causes the looper 2 to slide out of the fillet 3 as the needle moves upward, without jumps or bumps in the area of the needle tip 13.
  • the inclination of this bias grinding essentially eliminates the inclined position of the needle side surface relative to the looper 2 which is due to the twisting of the needle. Twist and bias grinding are known designs for such needles and are not the subject of the innovation.
  • FIGS. 2-6 corresponds, with the exception of the upper eye edge 9, to the known tufting needle described above. In this respect, it is therefore not necessary to discuss FIGS. 2-6 in detail, for which the same reference numerals are also used as in FIG. 1.
  • the upper eye edge 9 is no longer symmetrical to the needle axis 8 in the embodiment according to the innovation. Although this upper eye edge 9 is still curved, it has its highest point or its region 20 furthest away from the tip 13 off-center, namely in the direction offset on the front edge 10 or in the direction of the chamfer 6. In the exemplary embodiment, this offset is 20%, i.e. the area 20 is offset by 20% of the eye width in the direction of the front edge 10 or the chamfer 6. Accordingly, the thread 5 is offset by 20% of the eye width in the same direction. This means that the thread 5 is essentially no longer above the bias cut 14, which in the known tufting needle described above has enabled the thread to shift in the direction of the looper 2. The exclusion of such a shift prevents the thread from getting into the path of the looper and being able to be divided by it.
  • the offset of the area 20 should preferably be in the range of 10-35% of the width of the eye.
  • the proposed tufting needle can be connected as a single needle to a bar or can be combined into modules.
  • the needle can also have any desired piston design, in particular a round or a flat piston. Oval piston designs are also easily possible.
