Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for tightly closing a ceramic container for long-term storage of spent nuclear reactor fuel elements or other radioactive substances with a container body open on one side and a closure lid.
- ceramic containers are also proposed for long-term storage or direct disposal of spent nuclear fuel. These ceramic containers have both the required stability and the chemical resistance over the long period required.
- Such a container is known from FR-A-2 375 696.
- the container body and the closure lid of this container which is made of ceramic material, are sealed under high pressure in the hot cell after loading with nuclear reactor fuel elements by sintering. Practicing hot cell processes that require high pressures is not desirable in the hot cells of nuclear technology.
- the container body is provided with metal anchors before loading with the nuclear reactor fuel elements, which serve to clamp or screw on the closure cap after loading. This sealing of such containers is not as tight as the sintering together of the container body and the closure lid.
- the invention has for its object to provide a method for sealing a ceramic container for long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel, which is characterized by a good and tight connection between the cap and container body.
- the object is achieved in that the closure lid and the container body are connected with a metallic solder.
- the method according to the invention creates a good connection between the container body and the closure lid. Because of the method according to the invention, a simple handling technique is possible when closing the containers in a hot cell.
- solder molded parts are placed between the joint surfaces in a suitable form.
- the suitable heating device heats up until the metallic solder spreads in the area of the joining surfaces, binding forces acting between the soldering partners.
- This proposed method is particularly suitable for placing the metallic solder in the hot cell only after loading with the nuclear fuels.
- a further advantageous embodiment of the invention is characterized by the features listed in claim 3.
- the joining surfaces are pre-coated outside of the hot cell with the metallic solder. During the process of sealing in the hot cell, only a brief melting of the solder is necessary. The base material of the container body and the sealing lid can no longer be heated to the soldering temperature. This relatively simple melting of the solder coating can be achieved by simple inductive heating.
- the invention also relates to a container for long-term storage of spent nuclear reactor fuel elements according to claim 4.
- the ceramic container shown in the drawing has a container body 1, which is cylindrical and is open on one side. Furthermore, the container has a closure lid 2. Sealing lid 2 and container base body 1 lie one on top of the other, including an annular shaped part 3 made of metallic solder. The joining surfaces of the closure cover 2 and the container base body 1 are of stepped design. The metallic solder molded part 3 is deformed in accordance with these steps.
- the container is loaded with spent nuclear fuel in a shielded room, a so-called “hot cell”, using a remote control.
- the annular solder molded part 3 is placed on the joining surfaces of the container body 1.
- the sealing lid 2 which is shaped accordingly with its joining surface, is placed on the container base body 1 and thus on the annular solder molded part 3.
- a suitable heating device heats the solder molded part 3 as well as the container base body 1 and the sealing cover 2 in the area of the joining surfaces until the solder melts and the joining surfaces are wetted. Binding forces are effective between the soldering partners.
- the main body of the container and the cap consisted of A1 2 0 3 .
- TiPd solder was used as the metallic solder because titanium has a high affinity for oxygen.
