Description
Die Tendenz der modernen Maschinenindustrie in Richtung immer schärferer Betriebsbedingungen und
insbesondere höherer Arbeitstemperaturen hat zur Entwicklung von Schmierfetten geführt, die nicht
mehr mit Seifen, sondern mit anorganischen Kolloiden geliert sind. Man hat hierfür sowohl anorganische
kolloidale Stoffe von der Art der Kieselsäure wie auch basenaustauschende Tone vorgeschlagen, die mit oberflächenaktiven
Oniumverbindungen, vor allem mit Ammoniumverbindungen, modifiziert wurden. Diese
Schmierfette werden hinsichtlich ihrer Wasserbeständigkeit im allgemeinen noch durch Zusätze von oberflächenaktiven
Substanzen verbessert.
Für die Herstellung solcher Tonschmierfette sind zwei Verfahren bekannt, wobei gemäß der etwas umständlicheren
Arbeitsweise zuerst eine Dispersion des betreffenden Tones in Wasser mit einer Oniumverbindung
behandelt und nach erfolgter Reaktion der so gebildete Oniumton entwässert wird. Erst nach der
praktisch vollständigen Entwässerung wird dieser ao modifizierte Ton dem Schmieröl einverleibt. Gemäß
dem zweiten oder »Direktverfahren« wird das Schmieröl gleichzeitig oder nach dem Zusatz eines oberflächenaktiven
Mittels zu der wäßrigeri Tonsuspension zugegeben, und hierbei können die Mengenverhältnisse
der Komponenten nach einem nicht vorveröffentlichten
Vorschlag so aufeinander abgestimmt werden, daß sich ein großer Teil des Wassers durch einfache Mittel, wie
Dekantieren, abtrennen läßt.
Es hat sich jedoch gezeigt, daß die nach einem der beschriebenen "Verfahren hergestellten Schmierfette
eine sehr nachteilige Erscheinung aufweisen, die als
»Ausfließen« (slumping) bezeichnet wird. Hierunter wird eine Eigenschaft der Schmierfettmischung verstanden,
die dazu führt, daß das Fett während einer Ruheperiode aus einem Lager oder einer anderen
ähnlichen Stelle ausfließt. Gleichfalls zeigen solche Fette öfters eine schlechte »Ausbeute«, d. h. eine
schlechte Konsistenz bei einer gegebenen Menge an Ton. Erfindungsgemäß läßt sich nun sowohl die Ausbeute
wie die Eigenschaft des Ausfließens von mit Ton ίο gelierten Schmierfetten, die nach dem Direktverfahren
hergestellt werden, wesentlich verbessern, ■ indem man'die Konzentration des Tones in dem ursprünglichen
HydrosQl vor Einverleibung des oberflächenaktiven Mittels und des Öles in einem kritischen
Bereich hält. Dieser Bereich liegt im allgemeinen zwischen 0,3 und 0,9%, bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht
des Hydrosols. Wenn jedoch das Wasser in dem Hydrosol zwischen 0,0005 1^ 0,003 Gewichtsprozent
an Alkaliionen enthält, so kann sich der so Bereich von 0,1 bis 0,9 °/0 erstrecken. Zu diesem Hydrosol
wird, in bekannter Weise ein oberflächenaktives Mittel und ein Schmieröl gegeben, wobei die Zugabe
des oberflächenaktiven Mittels gleichzeitig oder vor Zugabe des Schmieröles erfolgen kann. Die Mischung
wird anschließend entwässert. Mittels der vorliegenden Erfindung werden nicht nur Ausbeute und Ausfließeigenschaften
verbessert, sondern gleichzeitig wird die Notwendigkeit zu einer weiteren Vermahlung des
Schmierfettes beträchtlich verringert oder eine solche entfällt ganz.
Die kritische Konzentration des Tones in dem ursprünglichen Hydrosol bezieht sich auf die Konzentration
des Tones naeh Abtrennung der Gangart und nicht auf den Rohton, wie er in der Natur vorkommt.
Die Abtrennung dieses unerwünschten Materials, wie z. B. Sand, wird am besten in der ersten Verfahrensstufe der Hydrosolbildung durchgeführt, indem man
die Gangartteilchen absitzen läßt oder abzentrifugiert. Obwohl sich Vorteile bereits bei Beschränkung der
Konzentration des gereinigten Tones auf~dsn Bereich von 0,3 bis etwa 0,9%, bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht
des Hydrosols, ergeben, wird ein noch engerer Konzentrationsbereich von etwa 0,4 bis 0,8% vorgezogen.
Insbesondere bei der Verwendung von Tonen mit großer Basenaustauschwirksamkeit, beispielsweise
Wyoming-Bentonit oder Hectorit, wird eine maximale Verbesserung in der Ausfließeigenschaft und der Ausbeute
an Schmierfett erzielt, wenn die Tonkonzentration des Hydrosols etwa 0,4 bis etwa 0,6 °/0, bezogen
auf das Gesamtgewicht an Ton, beträgt.
Eine weitere Verbesserung auch in. bezug auf Ausbeute
und Ausfließeigenschaften dieser Schmierfette wird durch die Einverleibung einer kritisch beschränkten
Menge einer wasserlöslichen Säure in das Tonhydrosol bewirkt. Die Zugabe von Mineralsäuren zu
dem Tonhydrosol ist bevorzugt, doch kann jede wasserlösliche Säure, deren Dissoziationskonstante größer
als 1,5 · ίο-5 bei 250 ist, verwendet werden. Geeignete
Säuren sind beispielsweise Mineralsäuren, wie Phosphorsäure, Borsäure, Salzsäure, Schwefelsäure und
Flußsäure, sowie wasserlösliche organische Säuren, vorzugsweise Carbonsäuren, wie Essigsäure, Propionsäure,
Milchsäure und Zitronensäure.
Die maximale Wirkung wird erzielt, wenn die Säurekonzentration in dem Hydrosol zwischen 0,002 und
0,005 Mol pro Liter Wasser des Hydrosols beträgt. Es muß betont werden, daß die angewendete Menge
der Säure nicht ausreichen soll, um die Tonteilchen vollständig zu acidifieren. Es wird angenommen, daß
Tone komplizierte Silikate sind, die in ihrem Kristallgitter gewisse ionenaustauschende Stellen besitzen.
Im natürlichen Zustand sind diese Austauschplätze vollständig mit einwertigen Ionen, insbesondere
Alkaliionen und vorzugsweise mit Natriumionen, besetzt. Man nimmt an, daß bei Zugabe der angegebenen
kritischen Menge von Säure ein Teil dieser austauschbaren Ionen durch Wässerstoffionen ersetzt
wird oder daß hierdurch sogar die Bildung eines chemisch modifizierten Tones verursacht wird, bei
welchem der anionische Teil der zugefügten Säure an die Tonkristalle chemisch gebunden ist.
Vollständig angesäuerte Tone ergeben dagegen Schmierfette mit unbefriedigenden Eigenschaften.
Daher ist es notwendig, die Säuremenge bezüglich des Tones so zu beschränken, daß nicht mehr als etwa 75 °/0
und vorzugsweise etwa 25 bis 50 % der austauschbaren
Ionen des Tones schließlich im sauren Zustand vorliegen.
Bei der Herstellung der Tone für die Verwendung in Schmierfetten wurde bemerkt, daß die Art des bei der
Bildung des Hydrosols benutzten Wassers die Qualität der daraus hergestellten Schmierfette in hohem Maße
beeinflußt. Insbesondere zeigte sich, daß die Anwesenheit der Erdalkaliionen. in dem das Hydrosol
bildenden Wasser eine ungünstige Wirkung auf die Ausbeute und die Ausfließeigenschaften der Schmierfette
hat. Es wurde festgestellt, daß der günstigste Effekt bezüglich Ausbeute und Ausfließeigenschaften
bei der Verwendung von destilliertem Wasser erzielt wird. Obwohl dieser Idealzustand schon aus praktisch
wirtschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten niemals erreicht werden kann, läßt er sich doch in einem befriedigenden
Ausmaß annähern, wenn man das Wasser bei Bedarf durch ein Ionenaustauscherbett gehen läßt, um so die
Konzentration der Erdalkaliionen auf unter 0,006 Gewichtsprozent, vorzugsweise unter 0,003 Gewichtsprozent
herabzusetzen.
Die Wirkung anderer Ionenin dem Hydrosolwasser schwankt mit ihrer chemischen Klassifizierung. Es
wurde bereits darauf hingewiesen, daß die Anwesenheit von Alkaliionen, beispielsweise Natrium- und Kaliumionen,
innerhalb beschränkter kritischer Grenzen in dem das Hydrosol bildenden Wasser den erfindungsgemäß
anzuwendenden Bereich der Tonkonzentration erweitert. Gleichzeitig werden so die Betriebseigenschäften
der Schmierfette wesentlich verbessert.
Es können verschiedene Mittel angewendet werden, um die gewünschten Ionen dem für die Hydrosolbildung
benutzten Wasser einzuverleiben. Am bequemsten werden die Ionen erzeugt, indem Alkalisalze iao
zu dem Wasser zugegeben werden, beispielsweise Natrium-, Kalium- und Lithiumthiocyanate, Zitrate,
Chloride, Bromide, Azetate, Sulfate oder Phosphate. Weiterhin hat die Gegenwart von Halogenionen
(Chloride, Bromide und Fluoride) in dem zur Bildung «5
des Tonhydrosols verwendeten Wasser in Mengen von
O,ooo5 bis 0,003 Gewichtsprozent eine günstige Wirkung
auf die Ausbeute und die Ausfließeigenschaften der Schmierfette. Darüber hinaus verbessert die
Anwesenheit von Halogenionen die Hochtemperatur-S Stabilität dieser Fette. Diese günstige Wirkung tritt
besonders in Erscheinung, wenn Fluoridionen anwesend sind, insbesondere wenn Natriumfluorid dem
Wasser zugesetzt wird.
Bei dem Direktverfahren bildet sich eine Mischung von Hydrosol, oberflächenaktivem Mittel und Schmieröl, aus welcher das Wasser entfernt werden muß, und die Verfahrensbedingungen können dabei so gewählt werden, daß wenigstens ein Teil des Wassers durch einfache Mittel, beispielsweise Dekantieren, entfernt wird. Auch bei dem Verfahren gemäß der Erfindung variiert die optimale Ölkonzentration mit der Art jeder der drei Hauptkomponenten (Ton, oberflächenaktives Mittel und Öl). Bei Verwendung basenaustauschender Tone mit einer relativ hohen basenaustauschenden Wirksamkeit, die im folgenden näher definiert wird, liegt dieser optimale Bereich zwischen 8 und 18, vorzugsweise zwischen 9 und 15 Gewichtsteilen Öl pro Gewichtsteil Ton.
Nach der vollständigen Entwässerung durch beispielsweise Destillation entsteht ein steifes Fett, welches durch den Zusatz von weiteren Schmierölmengen beliebiger Art zu der gewünschten Konsistenz verdünnt werden kann.
Bei dem Direktverfahren bildet sich eine Mischung von Hydrosol, oberflächenaktivem Mittel und Schmieröl, aus welcher das Wasser entfernt werden muß, und die Verfahrensbedingungen können dabei so gewählt werden, daß wenigstens ein Teil des Wassers durch einfache Mittel, beispielsweise Dekantieren, entfernt wird. Auch bei dem Verfahren gemäß der Erfindung variiert die optimale Ölkonzentration mit der Art jeder der drei Hauptkomponenten (Ton, oberflächenaktives Mittel und Öl). Bei Verwendung basenaustauschender Tone mit einer relativ hohen basenaustauschenden Wirksamkeit, die im folgenden näher definiert wird, liegt dieser optimale Bereich zwischen 8 und 18, vorzugsweise zwischen 9 und 15 Gewichtsteilen Öl pro Gewichtsteil Ton.
Nach der vollständigen Entwässerung durch beispielsweise Destillation entsteht ein steifes Fett, welches durch den Zusatz von weiteren Schmierölmengen beliebiger Art zu der gewünschten Konsistenz verdünnt werden kann.
Der in den Schmierfetten verwendete Ton kann ein nicht quellender oder ein quellender Ton sein, beispielsweise
Bentonite, einschließlich Wyoming-Bentonit oder Hektorit (Magnesiumbentonit). Vorzugsweise
weisen diese Tonarten eine Basenaustauscherwirksamkeit von wenigstens 25 Milliäquivalent, vorzugsweise
von 60 bis 100 Milliäquivalent, pro 100 g Ton auf.
Das in den Schmierfetten verwendete Öl kann jedes
wasserunlösliche Schmieröl sein, insbesondere ein solches mit einer SAE-Viskosität zwischen 10 und 60.
Zusätzlich oder an Stelle dieser Mineralöle können bekannte synthetische Schmiermittel verwendet werden,
beispielsweise Ester von Dicarbonsäuren, Ester von Säuren des Phosphors, Polyoxyalkylenverbindungen
und die entsprechenden Polymere und Copolymere von Polyalkylenglykolen, flüssige Silikone
sowie Fluorkohlenstoffe oder halogenierte Aromaten.
Das oberflächenaktive Mittel kann ein kationisches,
anionisches oder nichtionisches Mittel sein. Die kationischen Verbindungen sind besonders bevorzugt
und scheinen besonders wirksam bezüglich der Wasserbeständigkeit der Schmierfette zu sein. Wenn eine
vollständige Reaktion mit dem Ton zur Bildung eines Oniumtones gewünscht wird, können quaternäre Verbindungen
verwendet werden, beispielsweise Ammonium-, Phosphonium-, Sulfonium-, Arsonium- und
Stiboniumsalze.
Wenn nur die einfache Adsorption des oberflächenaktiven Mittels auf den Tonoberflächen gewünscht
wird, können auch die aliphatischen, langkettigen Amine mit 12 oder mehr Kohlenstoffatomen gut
verwendet werden, beispielsweise Octyldecylamin. Auch die Teilamide, die bei der Reaktion von Fettsäuren
oder Harzsäuren mit aliphatischen Polyaminooxyverbindungen gebildet werden, sind geeignet.
Andere gut verwendbare oberflächenaktive Mittel sind sotehe, die OH-Gruppen enthalten, beispielsweise
Alkohole, Glykole, Oxysäuren oder ähnliche Verbindungen. Neben diesen OH-Gruppen enthaltenden
Substanzen und den kationisch-aktiven Substanzen können andere Klassen von Verbindungen verwendet
werden einschließlich Seifen von mehrwertigen Metallen, beispielsweise Aluminiumstearat, und nichtionische
oberflächenaktive Substanzen.
Der Ton wird in Mengen verwendet, die ausreichen, um dem Schmierfett die gewünschte Konsistenz zu verleihen,
und diese schwanken im allgemeinen zwischen 2 und 20 Gewichtsprozent, bezogen auf das Schmierfett.
Das oberflächenaktive Mittel wird im allgemeinen in Mengen verwendet, die ausreichen, um das Schmierfett
praktisch widerstandsfähig gegen die zersetzende Wirkung des Wassers bis zu ioo° während einer
längeren Zeitdauer zu machen. Im allgemeinen wird hierfür das oberflächenaktive Mittel in Mengen zwischen
50 und 100 °/0, bezogen auf das Gewicht des von der
Gangart befreiten Tones, verwendet.
Um den Schmierfetten besondere, verbesserte Eigenschaften zu verleihen, können denselben weitere
Zusätze einverleibt werden.
Die Stabilisierung des Schmieröles gegen thermische oder oxydative Zersetzung kann durch Zusatz von
Antioxydationsmitteln vom Amin- oder Phenoltyp bewirkt werden, beispielsweise Phenyl-a-naphthylamin
oder 2, 6-Ditertiärbutyl-4-methylphenol. Andere geeignete Antioxydationsmittel sind Verbindungen der
allgemeinen Formel

hierin bedeutet R ein Alkylenradikal mit 1 bis 10
Kohlenstoffatomen, und die A sind gleiche oder verschiedene Garbonsäurereste, vorzugsweise Reste von
aromatischen Oxysäuren. Ein Beispiel für diese Verbindungsklasse ist Methylendicyclohexansäure. Vorzugsweise
werden diese Antioxydationsmittel in Mengen zwischen 0,25 und 2,5%, bezogen auf das
Gewicht des gesamten Schmierfettes, verwendet.
Geeignete, die Korrosion verhindernde Mittel sind die Salze von Kohlenwasserstoffsulfonsäuren, insbesondere
die Erdalkalisalze von vorzugsweise öllöslichen Erdölsulfonsäuren. Andere geeignete Mittel
sind die Nitrite, beispielsweise die Ammonium- und Alkalinitrite, insbesondere Natriumnitrit. tio
Beim Schütteln, wie es beispielsweise in einem Lager auf einer schlechten Straße auftritt, hat sich
öfter eine Neigung der Fettmasse zum Auseinanderbrechen (crack) gezeigt. Es wurde gefunden, daß
dieser geringfügige Nachteil überwunden werden kann, wenn polymere Olefine zugesetzt werden, beispielsweise
Polyäthylen oder Polyisobutylen, wobei diese vorzugsweise Molekulargewichte in der Größenordnung
zwischen 5000 und 25000 aufweisen. Auch die Reaktionsprodukte von halogenierten Naphthalinen mit
Metallsalzen von substituierten Xanthogenate^ wie z. B. die Reaktionsprodukte von chlorierten Naphthalinen
mit Natriumäthylxanthogenat oder den entsprechenden Propyl-, Butyl-, Pentyl- und Hexylisomeren,
wirken in dieser Hinsicht günstig. Vorzugsweise werden diese Zusätze in Mengen zwischen 0,25
und 2,5%, bezogen auf das Gewicht des gesamten Schmierfettes, eingearbeitet.
Die genannten Zusätze können der ■ Schmierfettmischung
in jeder geeigneten Stufe des Herstellungs-Verfahrens zugesetzt werden. Wenn die Zusätze wasserlöslich
sind, so wird ihre Einarbeitung vorzugsweise so lange zurückgestellt, bis praktisch alles Wasser aus
der wasserhaltigen Mischung der fettbildenden Komponenten
entfernt ist. Vorzugsweise wird diese Zugabe ίο bei solchen Temperaturen durchgeführt, daß das
Wasser der Lösung praktisch sofort aus der schmierfettbildenden Mischung entfernt wird, da die entstehenden
Schmierfette sonst weniger günstige Eigenschaften bezüglich des Ausfließens zeigen können.
Beispiel ι
Von der Gangart befreiter Hektorit wird in praktisch vollständig entionisiertem Wasser zu Hydrosolen
mit verschiedenen Tonkonzentrationen zwischen 0,15 und 1,6% dispergiert. Das Hydrosol wird auf 65
erhitzt und bei dieser Temperatur eine wäßrige Aufschlämmung eines oberflächenaktiven Mittels zugefügt,
welche dieselbe Temperatur hat. Das oberflächenaktive Mittel ist ein Kondensationsprodukt aus
Epichlorhydrin und Ammoniak, worin ein Drittel der Amingruppen durch Reaktion mit Talgfettsäuren in
Amidgruppen übergeführt worden sind. Das oberflächenaktive Mittel wird in einer Menge von 90 Gewichtsprozent,
bezogen auf das Trockengewicht des Tones, zugegeben. Anschließend wird ein mineralisches
Schmieröl mittlerer Viskosität in die Mischung eingerührt. Dieses führt zu der Bildung eines· käsigen
Niederschlages der schmierfettbildenden Komponenten, welcher sich von der Hauptmenge des Wassers
abtrennt. Etwa 90% des Wassers kann so entfernt werden, und der restliche Teil wird durch Destillation
bei Temperaturen zwischen 100 und 1200 entfernt.
Die Entwässerung wird durch ein isminütiges Erhitzen
auf 130 bis 1400 beendet. Es ist keine weitere
Homogenisierung zur Vervollständigung des hergestellten Schmierfettes notwendig. Die folgende
Tabelle zeigt, daß die Ausbeutewerte (bestimmt mittels -der Mikropenetration) und die Ausfließwerte bedeutend
besser sind, wenn die ursprüngliche Tonkonzentration zwischen 0,3 und 0,9%, bezogen auf das gesamte
Hydrosol, liegt.

Der Test zur Bestimmung des Ausfließens wird wie folgt durchgeführt:
Ein Fettring wird auf die Innenwand eines 600 ml Becherglases aufgebracht. Dieser wird zur Entfernung
von Luftblasen evakuiert und so mit einer Schablone behandelt, daß 100 +2g Schmierfett übrigbleiben,
welche einen Ring von 0,635 cm Dicke und 6,985 cm Breite bilden, welcher etwa 1,27 cm von dem obersten
Rand des Becherglases entfernt ist. Derselbe wird ι Stunde lang in einen Trockenschrank von 1400 gestellt.
Das Ausfließen wird gemessen als der Prozentsatz des Becherglasbodens, der durch das von den
Wänden abfließende Fett bedeckt ist.
Dieser Test stimmt überein mit dem CRC-Radlagertest, bei welchem Schmierfette mit einem niedrigeren
Ausflußwert als 85 % passieren und solche mit mehr als 95 °/0 ausfallen. Es muß bemerkt werden, daß ein Wert
von weniger als 90 % in dem Ausfließversuch als befriedigend betrachtet wird.
Wirkung der Säurekonzentration auf die Schmierfetteigenschaften·
Hektoritton wurde in destilliertem Wasser zu einem Hydrosol von 0,5 %, bezogen auf den von der Gangart
befreiten Ton, dispergiert. Wechselnde Mengen Phosphorsäure wurden zu verschiedenen Anteilen dieses
Hydrosols gegeben und daraus in der im Beispiel angegebenen Weise Schmierfette hergestellt. Die so erhaltenen
Schmierfette wurden bezüglich des Ausfließens geprüft. Die Ergebnisse sind in der folgenden Tabelle
zusammengestellt:

Claims (5)
1. Verfahren zur Herstellung von Schmierfetten aus einem Hydrosol eines als Gelierungsmittel geeigneten
Tones und einem Schmieröl unter Zusatz eines oberflächenaktiven Mittels, wobei das so erhaltene
Gemisch anschließend entwässert wird, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Konzentration des
Tones in dem Hydrosol zwischen 0,3 und 0,9 Gewichtsprozent und bei Anwesenheit von 0,0005 bis
0,003 Gewichtsprozent an Alkaliionen im Wasser, insbesondere Natriumionen, zwischen 0,1 und 0,9
Gewichtsprozent beträgt.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß zu dem Hydrosol vor Zugabe des Schmieröles und des oberflächenaktiven Mittels
0,002 bis 0,005 Mol je Liter des im Hydrosol enthaltenen
Wassers an einer wasserlöslichen Säure mit einer Dissoziationskonstante von mehr als
1,5 · 10-5 bei 250 zugegeben werden.
3· Verfahren nach Anspruch ι und 2, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß die wasserlösliche Säure Phosphorsäure ist.
4. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß das Wasser des Hydrosols weniger als 0,006 Gewichtsprozent und insbesondere weniger als 0,003 Gewichtsprozent an Erdalkaliionen
enthält.
5. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß das Wasser des Hydrosols zusätzlich 0,0005 bis 0,003 Gewichtsprozent an Halogenionen,
insbesondere Fluoridionen, enthält.
